Default Check your sump pumps friends

Hey guys, today is a good day to check the functionality of your sump pump. My house almost never gets water into the sump, in fact it's been about two years if I memory serves since it's ran a single time. However, with local rainfall amounts today, that sump was filling up and my pump appeared jammed! It was running but not sucking any water. And water level in my sump was rising!

I took apart the discharge piping and tested the backflow flapper valve, and after that everything worked. I suspect things were just jammed from lack of use and they needed bumping around. I'm so lucky I checked when I did.

So, take five minutes today and have a look. Would be terrible if your basement flooded due to equipment not working.

Also, princess auto has a good selection of sump pumps if you need a replacement or a spare. I have a spare on a shelf that I bought in June 2013.

Tried to give you rep for the helpful PSA but apparently I give you too much rep as it is.

Can someone else step in and hook a brotha up?

I can't give anymore Rep to either of you jerks.

So glad I'm on top of a hill though. No one has flooded in my street since it was built.

On a hill as well, no sump pump, no flooding in 23 years, only water that got into the house was during a ridiculous downpour in which the water couldn't drain away from the house fast enough and the water actually came through the basement windows. Hardly any though, carpets didn't even get wet as we wiped it up as it came in the window.
    Will fuck off, again.

Yeah, my house is on a bit of a hill, and we rarely get water into the sump, like that pump didn't run a single time last year, and maybe not the year before that. Today was the day though.

ES, you must be from southern Manitoba if you call that a bit of a hill.

It's not much of a hill, but enough that when my kids were learning to ride bikes, I had to be careful which direction I took them.

Why buy a house that relies on a sump pump?

Well. Any recently built home is required to have one so...

I did not know that. Is this just a Calgary bylaw or something?

Edit: I don't see it mandatory for one in Calgary, Edmonton has been code since 1988.

I don't know much about building codes, but in houses that have them, they tie into weeping tile so the house is actively channelling water into that spot. So if the house is built with one, it needs to be working.

    It’s not mandatory in Calgary.

We paid extra for ours (near the river) and it’s never even turned on. But we have good drainage away from our house (we’re propped up) and we’re high on our street.
