My indoor one has been running quite a bit the past couple of weeks. My outdoor one is hard to tell since it's so quiet, but i did test it when i installed it on May Long and seemed to have worked then so hopefully she's still OK.

What's an outdoor sump pump? What's it pumping out of?

well it's not a different type of pump, it's just physically outdoors which is why i called it my outdoor one. I moved into this house in December and the old owner left me instructions to install it on May long then take it back out in September so it doesn't freeze and get damaged (also no water issues during winter).

Basically he installed weeping tile under the deck when he installed it a few summers ago, and it directs water away from the house into a below-ground well thing in my back yard, which is where i put the pump. The pump then pumps the water from this little well thing out to the front of my house which slopes downward away from my house.

Long story short, it gets water away from the back of my house and back yard over to the front of my house and into the city drain. This is in addition to the system i have inside my house in my utility room.

Oh I get it. Interesting way to de-water your yard. Never seen one, but makes sense.

Another good day to take a look in your sumps. Good recreational activity.

Ours still has never triggered on. Short of filling it from the basement how do I know it works?

Some people flush their water heater tanks into the sump? I guess you'd need to pour water in there somehow?

Weather in the coming week is prime for sump pumps. Make it a habit to glance in there every day at least.

    TIL. Calgary has sump pumps.
I've owned 3 houses in Calgary, rented one, plus my parent's house where I grew up. Those and all the friends places I've been in (mostly Northwest Calgary), I haven't seen a sump pump since I left Ontario.

My house is 4 years old and didn't have one installed.

I think I may have to though. I have some fairly large cracks in the basement floor with whats looks like efflorescence depositing in a couple of them. Has anyone dealt with that before? Any other fixes other than trying to lower the groundwater table under the house?

Water will find its way in if the level is above your basement, it's just a matter of time.

It is not a code requirement.

Well, regardless of the value or requirements, if your home has one, it better work or you are in big trouble. So, if you have one, check it buddies.

Word up! We added one for a fairly insignificant cost, still don’t think it’s ever turned on but cheap insurance regardless.
