Default The Elbow River is disgusting

Not "new" news, but another reminder about how gross the elbow river is:

Coles: City cant pinpoint source of human fecal matter in elbow river, suspect multiple sources. Recommend not contacting water with face or mouth and washing hands before eating.

Shitty situation they can't wrap up. Guess the only thing floating on the elbow will be poop.

Article doesn't provide much info but I'm guessing they're referring to fecal coliform levels in the water. Fecal coliforms are present in soil an released when water erodes banks. Plus the Elbow flows through a bunch of ranch lands upstream of Calgary. Though it's funny that the article suggests people taking dumps along the river may be enough to contribute in any meaningful way to the volume of water that flows in the Elbow.

If they cared enough - they would put sensors on the stream to actively monitor levels more closely and build a proper database. Im sure devices exist now to correlate a reading of some kind with shit in the water (for eg. methane readings?)

For eg. correlating river flow rate with ppm of Ecoli. Does ppm increase or decrease with flowrate? Does ppm vary by season, independent of flow rate?

Right now its just people taking samples from the water and then going to a lab.

They don't specify, but the implication is that they tested upstream of the reservoir, and determined anither source inside the city.
I'd love to chat with the people looking into this. Sounds interesting.

That's the problem, the article only discusses one very small section of the river when you really need to look at it from an overall watershed perspective to get a better understanding. I would assume the work behind the scenes is doing that but the article doesn't help provide any understanding. The most downstream reaches would have the highest concentrations but it'd be nice to see some fecal coliform data/trends along the river to understand how it does jump in that stretch.

I swim in the elbow all the time. No pink eye or cholera to report.

I hope this keeps people off the river, more enjoyable floats for me.

The thing is, is that there's shit in everything. It's kinda like levels of radiation, you'll survive in it provided there isnt too much, or you dont have a nut allergy. Now provided the fecal scale is steady between " Dutch and Japanese ", youll be ok, but if it reaches " German " get the fuck out.

That and i'd take my chances with a concentration of turds, we got those lampreys here in ontario, and those things will clamp right down on your cack.
