The export truck business is still booming hey? This one is more typical of what I'd expect in most half tons.

It’s been a pretty slow summer. We’ve bought one truck that wasn’t a Ram since beginning of July and I don’t even remember the last time I bought a Ford (beginning of middle of June???)

So how many people out there are overloading their vehicles because they're not factoring the tongue weight of their trailer into their payload?

The reason I ask is because I saw Cayenne S towing a side by side this morning. Now a Cayenne S can do up to 1,859 pounds payload and can tow up to a 7,700 pound trailer. For a 5,000 pound trailer at a 10% tongue weight, the payload capacity has now dropped to 1,359 pounds. At 15% you'd be down to 1,159 pounds.

That all said, is this really much of a concern?

In your example, it would really depend on what else they have in the SUV and how Porsche calculates payload capacity, some manufacturers include a 150lb driver in their numbers and some don't.

I would say that a good portion of people are overloading their vehicles when they tow a travel trailer. The amount of people who think that tow capacity is the only number that matters when towing is concerning.

Institute a BC level of enforcement for weight and you'd probably see 30% of people taken off the road.

I see very clearly overloaded vehicles all the time, the kind where the rear suspension is riding on bump stops while the steering axle is barely touching the ground. It’s ridiculous what people get away with.

Yes, a huge percentage of people towing a recreational trailer are over the payload rating. It's why I find the topic so fascinating.

Saw a guy at the lake this weekend with a wrangler attached to a triple axle boat trailer lol. Really hope he was just using it as a launch vehicle and not for any appreciable highway time...

I wonder why they put such small tires on the AT4. It should easily be able to fit 33" (275/70/18) or larger 35" (285/75/18).

Totally. I was kind of surprised myself, I assume it’s trying to keep the EPA mileage in check

I think from what I have read 33/34 is no problem but 35 you will start rubbing.

Standard tires for AT4 are 275/60R20 so true 33’s, the off road performance pack goes smaller? Lol.

I think the duratracs run a bit taller than A/S. I’ll measure tonight and see.

GM has bullshit square wheel wells that make it a lot harder to fit big tires. My truck has 265/75/16s and they rub.

    Wow that is surprising.

I have 275/70/18 with a 2" level and no rubbing.

The new sierras like KR has, no longer have the square wheel wells though which is good.

Yeah they are a little bit taller but the EPA thing would definitely make sense. I was able to fit 275/70/18 duratrac's and KO2's with a 2" level on a 2015 sierra 1500 and with gatorback mud flaps so I bet with your AT4, they would fit.

Well they're not squarish but they're not roundish either. More like squarish/roundish or odd.

From back when a half ton could carry half a ton. Top one is my 81 GMC, bottom is my 91 GMC. Both 2 wheel drive regular cab shortboxes. Nevermind the wax on the second one. Somebody before me put candles in the glovebox and they melted.

    Those are awesome!

I wish I would have been in a place to buy my grandpa’s F250 when he passed. Would have been a great thing to fix up and keep in the family.

1,324 pounds, subtract let's say 700 pounds for a family of 4 plus the dog and you're really getting down low for towing.

Same story for all half ton trucks. It's been a while, but even with my tiny kids, I can have up to 900lbs of weight in my truck before I hook up my trailer.
Trailer adds another 900 pounds approx.
