School me on vacuums

Need a vacuum for a single floor home and I am not sure what to get. it is hardwood and carpet. house is plumbed for central vacuum

For most people, a good canister vac is best. For example, something like this: https://www.costco.ca/Miele-Complete...100459788.html

Stand-up vacuums are generally not ideal because aside from being bulky and hard to maneuver, you can't clean under anything like beds.

Don't waste your money on Dyson, it's overpriced junk for the most part - lots of threads on Reddit and other forums where people who work as vacuum repairmen for a living say that Dyson is keeping them in business, and the vacuums with the best internals are canister vacs from Miele, Kenmore, etc.

Or get a central vac if you don't mind hauling around the hose, and look into a sleeve for the hose so you don't mark up your walls.

Just my $0.02 anyway from when I have looked into this before.

Got a Shark Navigator from Canadian Tire.. works good.. can do a clean of both carpets and wood floors.

Then I'd go with the central vac, especially in a bungalow. More power, and you only drag around a hose instead of a whole canister.

I have a Dyson V6 and a V8 from their ebay refurbished site. I find they do a decent job and have changed my vacuuming habits since I wall mount them and they are very convenient to take off the wall to do spot vacuuming. I probably use it daily as I just vacuum whenever I see something on the floor and it only takes a few seconds. I personally have not had issues with the Dysons and I've had the V6 for 2 years and the V8 for 1 year now.

I just really like the ease of use of the cordless vacuums and will not go back to a traditional vacuum. Amazon started carrying Chinese brands of cordless vacuums and they seem to have decent reviews too. Dibea and Tineco seem to be popular.

That's an expected maintenance cost that I'm okay with, there are tons of aftermarket batteries available now anyway.

We have a Hoover Windtunnel 2 that you can prob still get at Canadian Mawfucker for $100 when it goes on sale every once in a while. We use that as the one for doing the whole house every month and it's stuffed by the end (2 people, no pets). We also have a Dyson V6 which is about 5 years old now for spot cleaning, cobwebs up high, spider busting, and great for in the car. I'd carry it in a holster if I could, I vacuum from the hip.

Central vac is going to give you the most power for the $$ as it doesn't need to be portable.
Dyson is pretty much the only brand you need to consider if you want to go cordless. The battery life is pretty poor so if you have a big house or more than say 30 minutes of vacuuming to do, I wouldn't consider it.
Sebo or Miele are the way to go IMO. Though Miele offers a canister, I would still prefer a bag. They have a spring in the bag that closes when you are removing it. This prevents dust from getting out / everywhere like it does with a canister.

Robo vac I think the current best is the Roomba S9+ but it is wildly expensive.

+1 for central vac.

We have a central vac, and a Dyson V6 for spot cleans/in lieu of sweeping. I think it's the perfect combo.

We have Central Vac which we use for deeper cleaning, but for quick ones we fall back to our 4 year old Miele (I think model is the S6 Continuum or something). It's actually a lot easier lugging this around and putting it away compared to our massive central vac hose.

If i were to buy one today, i would look into the Cordless Dysons personally just for convenience, but would also recommend the Miele too.

Check out Vacuum Specialists on centre street if you want to see stuff in person. They will let you demo them and will explain all the different types out there. Yousef should still be there...he knows his shit, and should be able to give you a great deal.

Our new place has hide-a-hose, would definitely recommend it for anyone doing a new build. No more lugging a hose around.

IMHO a canister vac is way easier to move around with than a ~50 foot hose, and the power cord winds itself back up compared to the central vac hose that is annoying to put away nicely. Anything that takes extra effort is something you will do less often, so pick whatever you prefer from that perspective.

Pretty happy with my Roomba. It's no where near as powerful as a canister or central vac. However, with it running on schedule 2-3 times a week, it doesn't have to. To be honest, may be I'm lazy, I ain't vacuuming my house that frequently regardless of how power the vacuum is and frequency is the key to keep the house clean. Yeah it's expensive but it has worked 230hrs for me so far. It's below minimum wage and dropping by every use. It can't totally replace a vacuum operated by a human for some hard to reach nooks and crannies but I don't have to clean those as often. It's not for everybody but I have no regret at all. The mopper is interesting but I'm not totally sold yet. May be I have to see it in action.

yup agreed. Our new house came with a central vac and we (read: wife) were super happy with it at first but just became annoying over time. Now that she's pregnant again, she makes me pull it out, unwrap it, then and put it away which is a huge PITA. The Miele with the retractable cord is WAY easier to deal with when you're done.

I imagine a cordless battery powered would be even more convenient. I know Dysons get a lot of flack for being overpriced, but i just love the idea of grabbing it off the dock, using it, then hanging it back up to charge.
