yup agreed. Our new house came with a central vac and we (read: wife) were super happy with it at first but just became annoying over time. Now that she's pregnant again, she makes me pull it out, unwrap it, then and put it away which is a huge PITA. The Miele with the retractable cord is WAY easier to deal with when you're done.

I imagine a cordless battery powered would be even more convenient. I know Dysons get a lot of flack for being overpriced, but i just love the idea of grabbing it off the dock, using it, then hanging it back up to charge.
Everyone else beat me to the pregnancy joke, I had to delete mine

Anyways, I agree, when I live at home my parents had a central vac with the hugest hose and I hated lugging that thing around. Sure it's powerful but it's a pain to use and you need to be managing the hose all the time to keep it from marking up walls/baseboards. A canister vac probably weighs less than a big central vac hose + attachment, and it's also less of a pain if you need to bring it out for smaller messes (or you can buy a hand-vac or stick-vac for those). We have a cordless hand vac and the thing is amazing for small messes or baseboards - 20 min battery life (Lithium so it doesn't lose power), all attachments built in, and washable dust bin. Bigger messes or if the house is getting a clean, the canister vac comes out. While convenient, I'm not sure you could get a full sized battery powered vacuum that could compete with the cleaning ability of one of the 12amp canister vacs.

+ 1 vacuum specialists on Centre Street. They have been around forever. Go there and they will help you out.

Our new place has hide-a-hose, would definitely recommend it for anyone doing a new build. No more lugging a hose around.
    That's what she said.

But take heed people, you can get this for any house now.

He said it's a PITA, can't get pregnant if he's putting it away there.

It doesn't have to go in the A to hurt the A if you're packing enough or get a running start.

I haven't touched my central vac in ages. Roomba on each floor, dyson hand vac for small cleanup, covers everything.

My brother had that same exact thing happen a few years back, dog diarrhea spread all over the hardwood, carpets and kitchen tile. Yum.
    Will fuck off, again.

Haha good call, I don’t think the mopper can handle that even. For now though I’ll take the risk, my boy usually throw up on the stair lol.

    ^^ haha, old school cool.

In truth I have 5 Roombas, 2 Dysons, 1 Kenmore, 1 Hoover and a Bissel in my arsenal. Keeps up with a shedding husky and I don't have to carry them between floors.

I tried so hard to like my Roomba but I eventually sold it. The dream of never having to vacuum was very appealing to me.

Emptying the dust bin and cleaning the brushes was a chore, and had to be done often enough that it was faster for me to just pull out a "real" vacuum. The dust bin is super tiny. If you live with someone with long hair like I do, prepare to be cutting hair out of the brushes every few days which is super annoying and time consuming. The Roomba took 2 hours to do ~5 minutes of vacuuming with a regular vacuum, and yeah you're not doing any work at the time, but the work comes later when you have to clean it. It couldn't get under my chairs, and bumped certain pieces of furniture hard enough to move them. A "proper" clean with a real vacuum was still needed every now and then because the Roomba has so little power, but it was good for daily dust bunnies. It got stuck on my hardwood transitions and I would have to take any rugs or random items off the floor before running it. If you have a primarily hard-floor zero-clutter environment with no chairs/stools I think they would work better than they did for me. It was so easy to just pull out the canister vac for 5 mins and get a proper clean to boot that I eventually abandoned my Roomba.

The new Roombas have auto-emptying dust bins which is pretty sweet, but I have no clue how well they work.

The auto catch bin is a sealed bag (like canister vac) that you take out after 30 loads.
Also the new roombas have rubber rollers so that hairs don't get caught. They just bundle up at the ends of the rollers.

Interesting. I had the 770 I think, so it looks like they switched to rubber brushes right after the generation I had.

The hair though would still be at the ends of the rollers with the brush version, it was just super annoying to get out - it would collect around the metal spindles used to hold it in place. They even include a tool for cutting the hair out which made it easier but it still took a long time. That link says long hair is still a problem for the rubber brushes, so I am not sure it would be any better for my particular scenario - with the rubber brush it also looks like once it's wrapped in hair, it won't be able to clean hardly at all.

I do really like the auto catch bin idea though, that would seemingly get rid of half my complaint with the one I had.

I remember my time with Roomba. Damn those were the days. People were fascinated with it at house parties we had. People would be yelling 'Turn the Roomba on!" So I would set it to clean and it would go about its business and people treated it like a pet. I'd hear people say "Whoa, watch out for the Roomba!" Then I would set it to dock and everyone would cheer when it made it's little dock complete jingle. Haha, ah man.

I still have it plus one more from my fiancee but I haven't used them in years. They are collecting dust somewhere. I find they struggle around table/chairs/end tables/area rug.

We usually use the Dyson chorded vac. Works well but it's a pain in the ass. Leaning towards getting a chordless Dyson soon.

I also have the Braava 380t robot mop for our laminate flooring. Not bad but not great either.

3yo kiddo of my friend has been treating roomba as a pet for a whole year of his life now. Every house they visit he is asking where is roomba so he can go say hi. Is always disappointed by the one house they visit that doesn't have one.

On topic: I bought a house with central built in. I use that for deep cleans. Daily cleaning is via robot vac and Bissell stick combo.
