I wish the UK had told China to eat shit and extended the treaty another 100 years. Not much China could have done about it back then, they weren't near the powerhouse that they are today.
At the time Prime minister Margret Thatcher looked at options of not giving HK back and met with ministry of defense. They advised against it. All China would have to do is turn off the water.

Can you imagine it in a alternate reality? Its 1997, HK sitting all smug behind British tanks and warships in the harbor as the British refuse to hand over to the Chinese.
Then on the Chinese side..you have a fat Asian buddha kinda military guy just turning off the water pipes with a straight face....

Kinda bonkers when you think about it.

Yup, utilities are power. Putin knew he could take Crimea because he can turn off the natural gas taps and let the people freeze or go back to eating rocks. There is no fighting that.

Germany can afford to put up solar installations that are 10x more costly than carbon, because for them - its just money - but if you have to rely on someone else for utilities you will always be a slave. Like how the USA is our slave

If properties are not being owned, capitalism would not exist in China, ironically China is the one push Capitalism to its limit in today's world.
The current wave of ownership was spurred by the law changed in 2007. Land rights the buildings sit on still belongs to PRC and land use grant is only 70 years.

Now it's a problem that won't surface until 2070 earliest so it won't be this generation's problem. At this point, nobody knows what happens when the land right expires and what the cost of renewal would be. May be they will abolish this system by then. May be it would be worthwhile for developers to pay everyone off and tear it down and rebuild with new grant. Who knows.

After seeing some pics and vids I don't think these young protesters are peaceful ordinary civilians.

Pssh, that's a paid Royalist feigning loyalty to the UKingdom if I ever saw one. Britain has a lot of money, its only right for them to buy a few protesters.

Nowadays you make more money protesting for the Saudis.

    https://vancouversun.com/news/local-...cancy-tax-bill

70 years is about right, at least in dollar terms. Assuming taxation of "foreign owned empty houses" in Vancouver is approximately the same tax rate at not owning at all. Lets not delude ourselves into thinking the British or the Canadian system is all that different - in the end you always end up paying anyhow.

HK hasn't been a happy place for a while. It's just getting to the boiling point now. The HK government is toothless and it has been the entire time. You think it had any say back when it's under the British? Those idiots asking the British to take it back are lame. It all comes down to quality of life. No one cared who was in charge when it was raining money back in the days. I don't know what the solution is to bring back the advantage. It certainly wouldn't come from the HK government. Regardless of the conspiracy theories and the extradition bill, it wouldn't take much to push some people over the edge. I understand the frustration of the locals. The violence was over the top but that's not a good representation of the majority. It is truly sad. You can say a lot of bad things about the Chinese government and rightfully so. I wonder if the young mainlanders feel the same frustration too. They have been under the communist rules the entire time after all.

Exactly. I don't know that if HK got power over itself that it would know what to do. How can you protest something that as a nation you have not encountered in 99 years?

That would be like me saying that Jeebus wine tasted like rotten grapes, without being around to actually tasting it.

Aug 5, 2019. Biggest movement yet since June. There was a press conference at 10am and it was not what people wanted to hear. Most of the city is shut down. The MTR and cross harbour tunnel has been blocked. Complete grid lock on the most busiest streets. People of each community is stepping in demonstrating from children and elderly. Even restaurants showing signs be donating food and water. People offering rides to the protestors to escape being caught.

Heavy focus on the masked hunny.

Pretty crazy what's happening there, I have no idea what'll happen.

Sounds like two vehicles have driven through protests. No deaths. More discreet than a tank

I dunno about them HK millennials. Lets put things into perspective: People in China smuggle milk and chocolate, people in Canada smuggle cheese. People in the USA get shot for shopping at Walmart.

Expectations about life might have been set pretty high, should a man be shot on sight for crossing a line in Area 51? Should a protestor be rubber bulleted for blocking the streets?

My fiance is from mainland China and is on the fence about the protests. Apparently one of the main reasons why the bill even came up is a guy murdered his girlfriend in Taiwan and fled to HK 2-3 years ago. He then proceeded to withdrawl all her money from her bank accounts while in HK and got arrested for theft.

He's due to get out of jail in October and because he cant be charged with crimes he did in Taiwan as long as he's in HK.

All in all I think there has to be a middle ground. Watching the protests reminds me of an extreme version of the ones for our pipeline. 20% actually care and the rest either want to start shit or are hired by companies.

It looks very peaceful from your pics, but this protest is becoming a riot. Some of my friends in HK are hating it, people with different views got cyberbullied.
