+1 I have had cats as pets most of my life and they are great. They take care of themselves for the most part and are an order of magnitude less work than a dog (I like dogs too). Just like dogs, I find people who hate them usually had a bad experience or met a poorly trained one - something along those lines.

Every cat we've ever owned has been very well trained/behaved. Came back inside when we whistled, rang a bell when it wanted outside, not a single mess on the carpet, never clawed any furniture, etc. They potty train themselves, you just need to show them where the litter box is. The worst thing I have ever seen them do is bring a dead bird inside but that was extremely rare. This is across 6 cats over many years. You can't train them to the level of the really smart dog breeds but it's more than enough to make things easy.
