What do the democrats have to gain from this impeachment? There's 0 chance that the Republican controlled Senate will get any further, and this will just fuel his re-election bid.
It feels like this exercise is purely for the lolz and that's it.

Let's assume this gets voted to the senate, and then eventually shut down there. I'm thinking they are trying to show they did everything possible to remove him, and that the republicans didn't let the impeachment happen. This may in turn rally the democrat vote and also all the fringe voters who didn't participate last election into voting. It may also turn some who hesitantly voted Republican against the party. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
So basically, let's divide the country even more while accusing the other of dividing the country? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

It's going to be hilarious if Trump wins again.
Divisive fear-based politics are very effective.

It will fire up his base, but not so sure it helps his election chances. Only 2 presidents have been impeached before, and only one in modern times. Indeed Clinton’s backfired (his approval rating went up), but that was a way different matter. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Democrats are banking on the fact that impeaching over a blowjob and having the president apologize is a way different scenario than impeaching over pressuring a foreign country to help him politically, then stonewalling any investigations. They hope this will sway independents and moderate republicans to finally ditch him
Besides that, if nothing else, maybe it will discourage a future president from doing something similar.
All that said, I still see him being re-elected at this point, but not because impeachment is helping him. More because I don’t think the democrats will have a candidate that will fire people up to get out and vote like trump did/will.

I also like how Congress is impeaching him, even knowing that it will (most likely) die in the senate, simply because it is the proper thing to do.
At the end of the day whether you agree impeachment will do anything or not, we learned a lot more during the hearings that we knew before. It's important to try to get as much of the story out there as possible. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
It is the proper due processes. Even if it doesn't get through the senate at least one wing of the government is functioning as intended.
Plus trumps ego is so fragile even if he doesn't get removed its gonna be funny watching him have meltdowns and rants as he 'doesnt watch the senate trial'
It's likely that whoever the Dems nominate will be dumber and more incompetent thant Trump - so I'm personally ambivalent about the next election. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
So watching the meltdown that occurs when Trump wins again will be amazing.

There was a blind disdain of a elected leader where opposition parties will do anything to discolor and oppose for the sake of opposing.
This is highly dangerous as the electorate is not stupid as shown by the UK election. We are seeing similar traits in the American system. If anything this may move people more to the right (or to the center from the left) in favor of Trump.
There truly is a Trump tweet for everything....

I give it a solid 90% chance that Asians (specifically Chinese) will be banned from setting foot on their facilities, just like NASA.

Impeached. Boom.

Plot twist: looks like they won’t send impeachment over to the senate until they learn more about what McConnell has planned for the trial

Edit: apparently this idea came from this op-Ed from a Harvard constitutional law prof:

Yup, time to stretch it out - milk the news for all its worth.

Knowing Trump, he might try to blame Russian hackers or China. Or he might just take the time to play some golf.

It said in the article that the Senate could just start the trial?
