Brookfield pulled this same stunt on us 6-7 years ago on our garage too. We kept it standard size.

It's fairly straightforward to extend a pad with a "cold joint". You're essentially going to dowel in rebar into the existing pad.
This also opens the opportunity up for you to have stub/frost walls built up a few feet, which can be nice if you like to pressure wash the garage floor, and would give you an extra foot or two on top of regular 8' walls, if you're into a taller garage...
I'd say fuck the 5k, and call some concrete contractors after you move in. Also a good chance to pour some concrete walkways, or a stamped/exposed patio as well...

Could be an issue to legally fit a bigger garage from a permits perspective. There's limits on % lot that can be occupied with permanent structures.
Maybe their $5k is partly dealing with modifying the permitted build but that still seems like bs.
You could also pay their contractor cash to make it bigger and middle the builder out if you can contact their sub directly.
This thread has me wondering how much I actually paid to up-size my garage....not sure that I actually want to know haha.

I was also thinking about doing what you mentioned-cutting out the builder and paying the sub directly to expand but I'm not sure how kosher that is.

I had a similar situation with my front pad. They needed to enlarge the apron 5 feet, which is on city property. The city pretty much charges what it wants to enlarge the apron to match the pad. The only good part is, you pay the cost, but the city will maintain it. It cost me 10k to enlarge my pad 5 feet. 65% went to the city
