Serious question, it was my understanding you can't "legally" buy a used baby car seat??

Do you have a source for that? I haven't bought one, but I've sold several now that my kids have outgrown them. No issues that I'm aware of. The only thing we ever did was take lots of pictures of the manufacture date, and expiry date, to show that they were still within the recommended date range for use.

I think that's it. It has to be within the expiry date, and approved for use in Canada (some people try to save money by buying one State, which turns out is not Canada approved)

    Quick search on this again.
Apparently its more a due diligence thing, but if a car seat has been in any accident its essentially garbage.
So you're trusting the word of a stranger.

You can't sell a used carseat in most facebook maretplaces, and maybe on kijiji as well, but that's for liability reasons. Most charities won't accept them as donations either for the same reason. As long as it hasn't been crashed, and it's within it's expiry date, no reason not to use a used one. They are also (nearly) impossible to recycle, so save the planet and sell them instead.

It's a conspiracy by the car seat lobby to sell more car seats. I have 2 kids and have 6 car seats... That's after "selling" two buckets.

Why would anyone keep using a car seat that's been in an accident?
No matter how small the accident is, the insurance will replace it for then you have to provide photos that you trashed the old one.

It's definitely not against the law; If so, it would stand to reason that the other part of that law would dictate parents must destroy seats once used.

More pertinently, seats are not to be used after they've been in an accident, so as a buyer you have to trust that your seller has not been in an accident with the seat (and obviously check that it's not past the best before date).

We bought our infant seat on kijiji, saved $200. If you have any doubts though, it's well worth it to just spend the extra money and buy new.

I had to do this, and felt like shite for doing it. Perfectly good seat gone to the landfill just because of an accident in which my kid wasn't even in the vehicle.

If people are leaving by ambulance. Generally fire cuts the carseat straps. Used to be policy at one point. Not sure if they still do.

This. Kijiji allows them now but at one time they didn't.
There's no risk is buying used. It's like being paranoid about razor blades in Halloween candy. No one would sell a damaged seat.
I sold some Diono fucking diamond crusted, platinum bullshit seats in there recently. Fuck, I hated those seats but I still got $100 each for them.

I've had to cut straps twice on car seats due to accidents and never once have been asked to provide photos.

To cover your a** .. I will say don't buy or sell used car seats.

There is "expiry" date, I think it is only 3 or 5 year, I got a bunch of old car seats, even I gave away to friends, they don't want them, so end up throw them away

I guess it is ok, if you get it from someone you know, and it is only 1 or 2 year old, still within the expiry date.

I feel like I can lend some expertise here as I used to be heavily involved in the industry. As most have pointed out, its not illegal to sell or buy a used car seat so long as its not expired or been in a collision. I know I will be selling my infant seat soon as I can make a couple hundred back on it. If you are a purchaser of a used seat, there are a number of things you can do to reduce potential risk.

    1. Don't purchase the seat unless the seller has the instruction manual.

    2. Most infant seats have an expiration period of 4-6 years from date of manufacture or date of purchase. As the purchaser, its on you to to find out which it is. The only info printed on the shell of the seat is the manufacturer date. Make sure you have at least 1 full year of expiry left from the time your child enters this world or you might end either using an expired carseat (may not function properly in the event of a collision, or you will get ticketed if pulled over)

    3. Check the overall condition of the carseat. Take to upholstery off the shell carefully and inspect both the EPS foam and the plastic shell. If any of the foam is compressed or cracker or missing, it can no longer absorb a full impact load, thus it is no longer safe. If the plastic has lightened in colour, that is a tell tale sign the hull has been stressed and likely either dropped repeatedly or been in an accident. Don't purchase it.

    4. You can recycle your damaged/expired car seat via Kids Seat Recyclers, here in Calgary. She charges a $10 fee but that covers the cost of actually taking the seat apart.

So why do carseats expire? Because they wear out. They are exposed to major temperature fluctuations which degrades the EPS foam and plastics. The webbing (harness) frays over time. Technologies improve over time and safety standards increase via legislation. Its not a conspiracy.

*Your insurance company will not replace your seat due to a collision free of charge if you buy it second hand.
**You are less likely to learn of a potential safety recall if you purchase second hand as you have no way of registering your item with the manufacturer.

When I helped parents choose their seats, I always recommended investing in the functional gear you will use day to day and skip the fashion goods. Why try to save a few bucks on the most important safety item for your kid? They dont need designer furniture. But they do need a good, safe, properly installed car seat. Let me know if you have further questions.

    Conspiracy? No.

    Regulatory capture? Almost certainly.

Car Seat Maker Lobby: "Hey government, we need an expiry date on our products."

Government: "Done, sounds good. Congrats on the revenue."

Expiry dates on many OTC drugs are exactly the same. Far, FAR in advance of there being any danger.
