Default SL for C8....the downgrade to domestic or an ultra upgrade

Well the husband is going through a mid-life immigration crisis. Trump has made bringing a non-north American car into the USA near impossible ( or just ridiculously expensive) By the time we actually want to get there car down there will be the telling whether the tariffs come into play or not.

Now that Chevrolet has finally come out with a decent player onto the Auto market we’ve definitely changed our tone of jumping back onto the GM band wagon again.

Let’s talk pros and cons of these two cars.

Both are real contenders for the depreciation crown, but since your SL is already a long way down that path, do you really want to start all over again?

Besides that, moving countries is a big enough pain - importing a Canadian market car just adds to the process unnecessarily (plus it will be nearly impossible to sell without an enormous discount relative to the market price)... Especially when both cars are easily replaceable and can be had for dirt-cheap on the used market in the US... Drive whatever you want while you're here, sell when ready to move, buy replacement in the US.

    Yep.

    Why complicate things unnecessarily?

As far as American cars go vette's actually do quite well, from personal experience I bought a barely used 2010 GS for $50K and sold it for ~$43K 5 years later.

After autocrossing it for those 5 years IIRC? I'd say you made out like a bandit haha.

The fact that you bought a "barely used" GS for $50k kinda makes my point, don't you think?

A lot of sports cars, especially in Canada, saw lower than normal depreciation (or even appreciation) between ~2011 and now. A large part of that had to do with the run-up in the general market, but that was amplified in Canada thanks to a favourable shift in the forex.

Has nothing to do with 458s, and actually they weren't really affected by the pricing run up or the favourable forex...

Corvettes, 911s, Caymans, even E46 M3s all saw lower than normal depreciation (if any at all) over the last 5 or so years in Canada. But it's not because they don't depreciate, but rather a case of "rising tides lift all boats" combined with a 30% swing in the forex...

Point was - I would not even consider importing a Canadian car if moving to the US, so drive whatever you want while you're still here, sell it and buy something new once you move to the 'States

I didn't track 458 prices too closely, just checked in now and then. But it seemed to me that it was pretty steady on that front too for a long time.

Personally I wouldn't even consider buying something I couldn't test drive or had to wait 1-2 years to get. If you want something in the near future without grossly overpaying, I would choose something else.

I also wouldn't buy something in it's first year of a brand new model, I'd at least wait for mainstream reviews, and a bit of time to see what issues reveal themselves in the first iteration.

It depends though. If you know something is a limited production run and want to ensure you have an unmolested example, sometimes you'll have to take that risk.

But in this case, you're definitely right. This will be a mass produced car that will be available for years.

Available for years AND will keep getting better over time with higher trim levels special editions etc.

I really don’t see the purpose of the hype for 2020’s all of a sudden aside from hardcore corvette fanboys

I suppose, it was actually a US car, at the time similar Canadian examples were going for $60K, which over 5 years still wouldn't be too bad.
