In theory we have a three account system but all the money goes into and comes out of the joint. I make considerably more than my wife but we both have full access to financial records (in and out) of that account at all times. My personal account has spiderwebs on it, the same low balance has just been sitting in it untouched for years. Her personal account that I don't have access to has a large enough cash balance in it that she could leave with the kids and be comfortable for at least a year without even working. I insisted on this so that she never felt trapped due to finances. I've seen women stay in borderline abusive marriages for 40+ years only because the wife couldn't financially swing leaving. That money doubles as our emergency fund so it would more or less just be sitting there anyway.
Not a bad way to handle the concern. Mel and I split our emergency funds: 1/3 joint account, 1/3 her, 1/3 me. The idea is that we have immediate access to money if one of us gets hit by a bus or something while we wait for the banks to sort out the drama.

It’s cute seeing how many of you are still with your high school sweethearts... built nothing before them on your own, and are not jaded due to past separations...

Can’t wait for the “getting divorced, do I keep the aeroplan, or the WestJet dollars??” Threads
I had my testicles removed once I got married, has helped tremendously with getting along with the wife.

Reliving this thread again makes me grateful (again) for my wife and life. Thanks for the reminder, Beyond.

Not married yet but we just have separate accounts. She earns a lot more and has no assets, I earn a lot less and have some assets. Not sure what the plan is yet if we get married.

    It is the way.
ditto. been doing it for 12+ years and it works great. I love being able to buy stupid shit without having to have a huge spousal debate about it. We each have our own fun money.

Can't believe all the Eunuchs on here with joint accounts.

Define saving goals, retirement goals, debt obligations, all else shouldnt have to be shared.

I'm the sole source of income for our family. I guess that's why a joint account works for us... anything else would just be needlessly complicated.

That said, I can't imagine doing it any other way...

Just had to review a client’s joint bank account... fucking disaster, not even sure who to blame but if I was the responsible one and my asshole partner felt it was okay to golf every weekend when the fucking account was in OD... I dunno... I dunno

OD vs. a credit card that never gets paid off...what's the difference? Lot's of folks roll like that unfortunately.

The CC’s (plural) are already maxed too. Can’t get into more detail, but really hated approving that one

At that point, don't you probably have bigger problems than whether or not you have a joint account?

Super common. I have family in that situation. It's weird and gross.

Could your dreams of living in Aspen come sooner with a one account system? Would the payments on your new Trackhawk be easier to stomach when you can rely on some of your partners income when your cash flow is already tapped?
Payments? That is not the Aspen way.

So you approved them for more credit?

Hi-5 for continuing to stimulate the economy.

Definitely not sure, I'm not about that sweet sweet Aspen life, I'm in the dirty SE. I tried to drive through Aspen once but they chased me off.
