Calgary weather is always a gamble, and therefore so is overseeding. June is historically wet with good temps for growing, so if we get back to "seasonal temps", it'll be fine.

I'm hoping to overseed this week as well.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Do you guys use starter fertilizer everytime you overseed? I overseeded in May and used just regular lawn food, and I noticed that not as many new sprouts came out

I did, used the expensive soil and peat moss.
Not sure where I went wrong but not great results. Just a waste of seeds. Good times

She's growing quickly. Almost need to mow 2x per week. Just irrigation (DIY), and some UFA fertilizer (1 round so far). Still love my EGO mower.

Water. You have to water. Like a lot. It can never go dry until the seedlings have a good root system, which is going to take a couple of weeks at least.

I did some seeding last year, I think. I can't remember. It's the water that made the difference. I bought this place a year ago and the grass was basically dead, it was a rental property. I'd saw a basic irrigation system > everything else.

Also, I love the killex in the bottles you attach a hose right to. I have not sprayed this year yet, but it's worked the best in past.

Buy the concentrated Killex, make your own strength in a sprayer. Works way better than regular Killex.

@suntan : what kind of concentration are you mixing for spot treatment? how many ml/litre or ml/gallon?

Lawns look great. I have just been doing regular cutting. Weather has cooled down. Haven't sprayed/thrown down any fert. I'll spray some liquid iron tonight to get things deep green without pushing growth. Will try and get some before/after shots.

I do double the concentration of what they recommend. I find regular strength often doesn't quite kill the weed.

I find the hose-plug in type convenient because I can spray large areas, quickly. If I mix my own, I'd have to do only spot treatments. The Killex bottles for the hose-plug in type are designed to be really tough to re-use, basically to refill with concentrate. I tried, and it just leaked.

    Nah man, this:

    https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/c...mp+sprayer#srp

You can do a large area easily.

The hose end sprayers are illegal now.

Huh. I guess it was only the weed'n'feed ones they banned here.

    My method is still better.

I dethatched my front lawn, raked up all the remaining dead leaves and grass, then sprayed some liquid aerator.

Just used Scotts turf builder grass seed, went over my lawn again with a rake in both directions to sow the seeds into the soil. Water three times a day. We will see how it looks in 3-4 weeks.

I just had an irrigation guy come by last night to check things out and give me a quote but I wanted to know beyond's experience of growing a full lawn from seed? We have a horrible front yard where the previous home owners did everything in pea gravel so we are ripping that out and putting in a lawn. I'd like to avoid sod because it would be expensive as shit and figured with irrigation timed properly seed might not be a bad idea. Thoughts?

You can do it. Have had great success with it in the past. Prep everything now, get it ready for a fall seed. Throw seed down in late August/Early September, water religiously, and it should go great.

Seed works fine if you have the patience. My seeding repair looks better than the original sod.

Can seed with a better mix of grasses than typical sod as well. More fescue is my preference for Calgary.

I just used EZ Seed on some patchy parts of the front lawn and see how it goes.

It's supposed to rain today and tomorrow so I'll do the Turf Builder on the weekend and hope I can salvage the lawn.
