When's a good time for fall aeration and fertilizer. Can we start already or wait a few more weeks till late September/early October?

Put some dirt or compost on top. You don't need much, just a very thin (2-3mm layer) Putting grass seed on top does nothing, it needs to be covered a bit.
I did, but unfortunately those assholes aren't as dumb as chickens. They know there's seed there and they peck until the find it. I spent most of Sunday afternoon chilling on the front porch with my dog tied to the tree, chasing them off whenever they landed. I haven't seen them since, so hopefully they were just migrating through and found easier pickings south of me.

You need to kill them all before they procreate.

Grabbed a bag of scotts fall fertilizer from Costco, going to cut the grass a bit lower tomorrow and put down fertilizer and over seed.

If overseeding right now, does grass have enough time to establish before it gets too cold? Temp just needs to stay above 0c?

Probably too late now. Our first frost could happen this week, or it might not. Calgary weather is hard to predict.

I thought you could put seed down whenever. If it doesn't sprout prior to winter, will it not just pip up in spring? I thought that was a good way to do it, so it gets all the snow as moisture in the spring? Maybe that's just sod?

Putting down seed when it won’t germinate is just going to attract birds and rodents

If the seed manages to germinate but not grow very much, they'll die in the first frost. So putting it down now is a gamble because our current daytime highs and lows are enough to germinate the seeds, but if they don't get big enough by first frost (which could happen any day now), they're goners. Rye grass has a better chance, but there's no way Kentucky Bluegrass will make it. On the flip side, if you put the seed down in the beginning of October, there's zero chance of them germinating and they'll either get eaten by wildlife, or just sit there until spring when they'll start growing.

I put mine down last weekend, but I knew it was probably too late already.

They should sell seeds with some sort of harmless additive that is unappetizing to birds/rodents.

    Million dollar idea?

Someone gave me bird bell that was apparently covered in some sort of spicy red stuff that was supposed to keep squirrels away but somehow zero fucks given by the birds. I re-gifted it...
Surely Monsanto is working on your idea.

Fertilized yesterday, pushing with a solid watering today but still kinda feels like a waste with cold weather on the way. How late is everyone watering into the fall?

Irrigation guys are coming in the next couple of weeks to blow out the lines, so I'll be shutting off the water this weekend.

You want plants and grass to stop growing because of the cold, not because of lack of water. If the roots fully dry out in the fall, the plant could die and not regrow in the spring. My grass and plants are still very green, I’ll be watering for awhile.
    I like neat cars.
