@ipeefreely How did it work out? Did it do an ok job? Last day for the sale and am considering grabbing one.
@Tik-Tok Sorry a little late... worked pretty well I guess. Much easier the raking!

Happy with the results but it was a lot of work since I hadn't dethatched the lawn in 5+ year just given it a good rake each year.

My backyard was very thick I spend about 2.5 hrs just doing that on Sunday. Monday I did the front and side with a mow in about the same time. Got 7 XL bags of grass at the end.

One thing I will say do not even try to use it if the grass is even a little wet. I hit a few small wet spots and it would just rip it up and the wheels would clog up.

The manual suggested doing it twice a year and I think try to keep to that should be much quicker next time.

Oh, not sure if the bag is worth it. Filled up less than a minute! Probably much better if the grass isn't too thick!

I'd say get the Sun Joe unless you have Canadian Tire money to spend. At this price range they're probably all the same in terms of performance.

My bag is absolutely worthless. I removed it and let it go to ground then just use the lawnmower to suck it up.

Top dressing question: Anyone have any good experiences with a source for a yard of compost? I've done a little research, and found some people are unhappy with home depot yard-orders as it can be really clumpy and full of clay.
Soil Kings, in town seems to have decent quality compost according to their site for $70/yard for pick up. https://soilkings.com/product-category/soil-products/

We've always ordered from Burnco, seemed decent.

Is there any difference between an actual detacher and just buying a different blade for my mower? Aside from having to change a blade every spring

The “blade” spins on a completely different axis.

A real detatcher is much more effective.

If you're willing to go the pick up route, the city has it for free (though not nearly a yard worth, only 100L)

100l is a few buckets. He needs yards.

My 4 yards of topsoil came today. I cut the lawn short. Beginning top dressing... Name: 20220429_174640.jpg

Time to see how the levelling rake works.

Maybe they’ll enforce it this year but they pretty well let you take as much as you want.

If the purpose is to level, use sand. Pretty much all soils will contain weeds.

Sand is good, but only if the lawn is already pretty level. It gets you from average to golf green. If you want to go from shitty to average, my understanding is you want to use soil because when there’s deep dips that need to be filled, you’ll need to put some seed on top since the grass will be mostly covered… and seed obviously doesn’t do well in sand.

You aren't going to get much more than a yard of soil in a normal 1/2 ton anyways, without overloading your truck.

Do you typically top dress the whole lawn after dethatching? Thinking about picking one up this year. Beats manual raking any day.

True. I didn’t use a truck, just filled up a bunch of buckets/totes and put them in my suv. 100L max is Definitely not enforced while you’re shoveling into your containers/truck, but there’s a person there checking people out (removing a small slip of blue tape off your windshield) so if you’re leaving with an entire truckload they might say something.

Looks like the 25 pound bag of Scott's EZ Seed is on sale for $55 at Costco this month.
That's a ludicrous amount of the stuff, but if you got fisted by voles or share with a couple neighbours, I guess it makes more sense.

So I used my lawn levelling rake yesterday to spread 4 yard of material and was impressed. I dumped wheel barrows of top soil onto the areas that needed top dressing/levelling. The lawn level rake had the areas laid out flat in no time. I found it worked much better with the less effort you apply. I did use a push broom in a few areas afterwards to get the top dressing really pushed down into the grass.

If you are planning a major renovation, or have a really bumpy lawn and are working with lots of material to get it level, definitely worth the money. For reference, I paid $99 USD with free shipping.

I was out late tossing seed down as rain was expected today, sure enough woke up to a nice drizzle which is perfect for my needs. We have light rain in the forecast all week. I'm a happy camper.
Will try and snap pics today. I was working in such a rush yesterday just to get done.
@Ekliptix and @XylathaneGTR who requested a review once I used it.
