Or maybe just buy one bag of EZ seed and cut it with normal seed?

EZ seeding your whole lawn would make you the biggest Beyond baller ever.

Topdress soil. Order a few yards.
    Toss some seed down.
    Water.
    Fertilize.
    Profit.

I haven't gone through 50+ pages of previous posts, but has anyone discussed sapplings before? Those baby tree growths that pop up in your lawn from neighbouring trees, either from seeds landing or growing up from roots. What are the best methods to get rid of them? (without killing the host trees, if they're coming from roots)

I'd probably get rid of your weeds before detaching and aerating, and seed right after as you're making microsites for seed to grow.

EZ seeding your entire lawn wont be a cheap proposition. You'd be better with an aerate and then doing a topdress of topsoil/mulch that is mixed with seed. A bit labour intensive but probably better bang for your buck then EZ Seed.
We applied Killex about 2 months ago, majority of them died but there have been new sprouts. Oh EZ seed was just an example I was thinking anything that had seed and fertilizer just mixed in general.

Ill apply Killex, wait 24-48 hours before mowing/dethatch/aerate the lawn. Hopefully the rain the next few days or next week doesnt wash it away

You're going to want 12ish hours of dry weather after spraying killex or else it just washes away. Pretty sure they note 8 hours on the bottle.

Careful Roundup application (on the leaves) should kill the shoots and not harm the parent tree.
    I think...

    This really depends.

We had 3 columnar aspens on our property that we removed last year. This summer we started getting saplings so I pulled the stumps and the saplings exploded afterwards.

Either I am rototilling the area to cut all the roots up or I am hoping that during winter freeze it will kill anything under the surface.

So you need to figure out what is causing them and decide to either remove the source or be in a constant battle of saplings.

They grow faster than I can pull them.

Roundup isn’t permanent permanent. It will kill anything that’s there, but in 6-12 months you can reuse the soil.

I've seen on youtube people are using push broom, I've used standard rake. Any other suggestions?

If I cared that much about having a perfectly flat and level lawn I would just pay someone to do it.

After all my EZ Seed patching I need to level my lawn big time. My dad suggested to get it soaking wet and roll it, not sure if that'll do the trick or not.

I hate voles lol. Making holes at the edges and causing the grass to basically unroot itself.

    Bastards.

I wouldn’t use roundup on those unless u know for sure they are independent saplings and not suckers. Roundup on suckers will harm the host tree.

The only thing you can really do is pull them or if they are not easy to pull, mow/cut them.

I feel like this year is really bad for suckers due to the heat. Water your tree and it should help prevent them from popping up but aside from that I haven’t found a better solution

Don't do that, you will compact the ground. Use sand and the tool that Nismodrifter just posted. If you want to see that procedure check out Connor Ward lawn levelling on YouTube. Guy has a putting green for a front yard.

My front yard is looking like crap. Is it a good time to reseed? or should I wait till the fall? or just wait till next year? ive covered some patches in the backyard with great success and that grass is looking pretty decent but upfront is a way larger area.
i patch pee marks all through the spring summer fall, if it is too hot it is waste of time, but right now with cooler weather and rain it is perfect time

You think you will get enough growth and germination in the next 6 weeks to take hold?

I’ve had zero success with late summer/early fall seeding. Always seem to have an early frost, snow, etc that kills everything off.

I was told 6 weeks before first frost which is typically mid-Sep, so the latest you'd want to seed would ideally be August 1st. Otherwise new grass won't be established enough and will winter kill.

I'm gonna try dormant seeding once it cools off, just mixing a big bag of dirt and a generous amount of seed and spread that in all the rough spots

Wish me luck, I'm going to try EZ-seeding the trench for my garage utilities today. Seemed like a good time with the rain we're about to see in the next week.
