On my daily jog I passed by a house on my path, and it had green grass already whereas every other house had yellow dead grass. Da fuq? It didn't look like fake astro turf though.

What? You guys don’t have a glycol heating system under your lawns to keep it alive 365 days a year?

My backyard is surprisingly green already. I think laziness and not raking all my leaves up until yesterday seems to have made the grass happy.

Grass is starting to green, is it too early to fertilise with the negative overnight temps still? Was debating throwing some down before the rain tomorrow...

Can't really comment if either is a good idea but Friday it's also supposed to rain and would be better going into the hot weekend no?

So long as night temps are below zero, it's pointless to fertilize. Best case scenario is that the fertilizer just becomes inert until warmer weather arrives, worst case is that your seedlings start to sprout and dies with the freezing weather and you've completely fucked your lawn and will need heavy over seeding.

Just a reminder to everyone that this is the typical Calgary false-spring. My own lawn is still frozen 2" below the surface.

Exactly, my great realtor got me a south facing spot.
Still frozen ground a few inches down.
Plus it'll snow again, put away the shovels on Sunday.
    You're welcome.

A couple of my tulips are starting to poke out in my flower bed so I'm dropping a couple bags of soil on top of it this afternoon to hide them from the rabbits and the inevitable snow fall.

Side note: My war with the voles was successful. Poisoning the living hell out of them worked. I am going to be leaving the poison out as I see my neighbors lawn has tracks.

    What poison did you use?

A new area of snow melted in my yard yesterday and the lawn is fucked up underneath; not sure if it was mice or voles, but it was one of them.

Buy more than you need. Place more than you need.

If you find their nest or hole in the ground, shove a brick of poison down it and cover it up alternating gravel and dirt. Don't go easy on it, apply liberally.

One thing I noticed on my yard is the damaged areas are mostly where I had tried to soil/reseed last year. very weird, might have to resod in small patches this year.

Thanks. I think I'll have to buy some of their little pre-loaded, sealed poison boxes, which I assume have the same stuff in them. I have dogs, so I can't take the chance that they get ahold of it.

Just be aware that they may get to the dead poisoned vole. Especially if they're diggers.

Last summer was our first full summer in our home and our lawn was a disaster. It’s got dead patches, and crazy weeds. I couldn’t keep up with it, looking for recommendations for a company to do some maintenance to at least get it up to liveable standards?
