Let's see how this ends up.....put seed down Sept 4. Some areas might be too compacted. I tried to rake it up a bit, but not sure I did enough. Let's see how it goes as my first attempt.
I spread some starter fertilizer, then seed. Raked slightly, and water morning and afternoon about 15 min each. Any tips????
Just keep it wet. Could spread a layer of peat moss overtop to help, but that seems like a lot of work.

Yeah keep it wet. See how it goes.
Is it a good idea to aereate before overseeding/fertilising?
Definitely. I aerated and dethatched last weekend, fertilized on Wednesday, and just finished overseeding today. Might be a couple of weeks late, but it's so hard to predict out first hard frost. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Manual labour with a pitchfork or did you rent a machine? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Rented the aerator. Though sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't be just as much work (and less money) to use a manual tool. Aerators suck to maneuver. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
So now that all the seed is down, a hoard of blackbirds has shown up to feast on it, mutherfucks. Probably 50 of them in my front yard right now.

Those are the grackles ice been talking about. I saw 1.0000 last year. This year, 38 million. I even saw them in PEI! Shitty fuck wads. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Well. my lawn reno is happening as we speak. Aerate, top dress, and overseed. I gave the lawn a fresh fresh cut last night, super low. I will spray Tenacity tonight and then water it in. Weather is ideal. Fingers crossed that everything grows in nicely.
I was thinking of doing this before it rains this week. Would a layer of dirt on top keep the vermin away? Bags of soil should be cheap now, I need like 100.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Wife is worried that the seeding will attract the voles again, but in poison I trust.

ya put dirt over it for sure, do layers, dirt seed rake, otherwise the birds eat it all lol

It's even on sale.
I like neat cars.
rented the aerator from HD
glad i did, it's still hard work but I can only imagine how long it would have taken doing it manually
Put some dirt or compost on top. You don't need much, just a very thin (2-3mm layer) Putting grass seed on top does nothing, it needs to be covered a bit. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
100% this! I tried a couple times with seed and religious watering but nothing until i took suntans advice in the spring about putting soil on top after seeding. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

For patches - couple bricks and an old flat sheet (white's better I'm told). Lay it over - keeps the birds from running off with seeds, keeps the temps stable and water from evaporating as quick.
Grandparent hacks ftw.
What's the best fall fertilizer and I remember seeing grass seed recommendations, but can't find it in here now.
Thanks!
