I dethatched and seeded last weekend. This is what it's currently looking like. Have been watering daily.

If it's warm outside and we're not getting rain, you need to water 3-5x daily. If you didn't put some type of topdressing/soil down with your side, it's going to take a lot more work to keep the seed wet.

I stress again that I’m still learning to do lawn care…

Are there recommendations for a powered dethatcher/aerator? I did it manually for the first time today with a rake and it was time consuming for the backyard. After I mowed the lawn I raked up lots of dead grass.

It rained a bit after, thankfully and I’m gonna tomorrow to buy some seeds and hit it so the weeds get choked out

Unfortunately the pine tree is sucking up water and casting shadow so I get patches. Any recommendations ?

*those look more like Spruce trees but, whatever...
In shady areas, I'd consider doing some over-seeding with a grass mix that prefers shade and then it will somewhat blend itself and not look like a stark strip of a different grass.

Thanks! I’lldo that. And you might be right about the spruce. All I know is that it’s sucking the life out of that part.

Might grab these since they’re on clearance: https://www.rona.ca/en/product/pro-m...45810-85665144

Dethatchers that run off a power cord are fairly cheap. Usually under $200. They don’t suck up the thatch tho, so you’ll still need to rake to clean up all the thatch or lazy way would be to pick up with a lawn mower.

Id lend you mine if you don’t want to buy one. I’m in the NW

My front is a beautiful plush shag carpet of thick green grass now, and my dead spots in the back are following suit.

It's truly all about the water. Those cheap amazon timers are the ticket.

Will probably switch back to the Oto soon here and see if it can keep the grass alive. But now i'm worried my grass is spoiled with the heavy water schedule and will just die haha

    Thanks @sabad66

I dethatched the front today after the mow and I really want to save it because it’s dead af due to neglect (fiancée has death hands for plants), and holy fuck so much

I’m going to start reseeding the backyard first because it’s smaller and going to test out how to do it first and learn for the front as it’s way bigger

From what I can se in those photos… you have a fuck ton of weeds? And crab grass?

Maybe better to rip the grass and resod at that point?

Might be an uphill battle is all

Ya, depends if you care about crab grass. The only way to get rid of that much of it would be to rip up the lawn. If you don’t care about the crab grass, make sure you nuke the weeds with something before you bother planting. Just get some broad application 2-4D and a few days later you can get on with seeding.

Hmmm maybe for the front I’ll just resod it. For the backyard I’m gonna overseed and top dress it but dang it I missed my window today. Now it’s spitting

@flipstah as mentioned, your lawn is all weeds. Nuke it all with roundup. Plan for an early August reseed (ideal timing). Buy some better quality seed, take back the contractor grade stuff. I can layout the steps if you'd like to do a full reno on the lawn from seed.

Lawn is far from beyond saving IMO.

If you are ok with crab grass, yes.

If a person doesn’t want crab grass, there is too much here to do anything with except roundup basically.

The goal should be to get seed in the ground the first/second week of August.
Buy a pump sprayer and concentrated Roundup from Canadian tire. Mixing your own Roundup is more economical than buying the premixed stuff. Round up the entire lawn right away. Over the next couple of weeks water to encourage weed growth. Round up again in another two weeks. You can repeat this a third time right before you drop seed.

As far as seed mix, I would opt for a better quality seed than the contractor grade (won't be a huge price difference for a lawn that size). I would look for a Kentucky Blue grass and Perennial Rye Grass mix. The benefits of KBG is that it will spread over time, filling in bare spots, the disadvantage is that it takes a long time to germinate (around 2 weeks). The PRG will germinate quickly but doesn't spread.

Before seeding, spend some time to rake the ground nice and level. You will need a fertilizer spreader. I usually seed with a little extra, as the birds like to eat the seed. Rent a lawn roller and roll the seed into the dirt. Get a few bags of peat moss and spread over top of the seed. Spread starter fertilizer. Water 3 times a day. You want to keep the seed moist but keep an eye on your watering, if you water too much you'll create puddles and that will wash the seed away.

    Quackgrass, not crabgrass

Crabgrass is an annual. Quackgrass is the annoying perennial that spreads sideways.
