You could probably take it right off, this is actually a good time to use the cheap black earth stuff as it compacts well.

Gettin to be that time of year.
It is still a tad chilly out here but I power raked, cut, and cleaned up the flower beds/bushes of last years over growth.

Anyone use a reel mower? I am looking to do a mid week (or nightly) trim, without making any noise as baby is sleeping. I figure its a good activity to get me out of the house as well @ night.
School me on reel mowers? Suggestions re a quality reel mower? Do they actually work or am I crazy?
I have a manual reel mower, there are some pros and cons. You can cut much lower compared to a rotary without scalping if you have uneven terrain. Good for cutting newly sprouted grass as it is lighter and doesn't disturb the ground like a rotary. You get a cleaner cut compared to a rotary, it's a scissor action as opposed to swinging a blade. Obviously easier to store and move around.

Cons are you need to check the bed knife alignment often, there's quite a few youtube videos on how to do it, it doesn't take too long. It will miss some random strands of grass here and there. Obviously it takes longer and more effort.

Every time I see someone using a reel/rotary mower, they always seem to be struggling with them and it looks like they are having a terrible time I bet most people probably just buy them because they like the idea of it, but don't bother to maintain them.

Half the girls I see working landscaping in summer would definitely be candidates for that business.

It's inefficient, and old school, so hipsters love it.

A properly maintained reel mower will last many lifetimes. That's why stores sell so many every year.....

So after a whole bunch of research I went with a Fiskars Reel mower. To be clear, this is a "COVID" purchase, something that I don't particularly have a need for, but I think will work in terms of getting me out of the house for some fresh air/activity/a mental break after our baby (hopefully) sleeps all while being mindful re: noise.

I'll be able to cut as low as 1" without any scalping. I particularly would like to get my backyard this low so this is where I will focus a bunch of my attention. For the remainder of my lot I will probably do a once week routine cut with my AWD VTEC Husqvarna, and then do 1-2 mid week trims with this machine (at a slightly lower height than I cut with the gas). Not sure if I'll be able to tackle the entire property in 1 go, so might break it up and do a bit every night.

I tried it out this evening, works like a charm. Very easy to push, not a struggle, easier than pushing a gas mower to be honest. Looking forward to using this through the summer as the days get longer.

I will be modding it a bit too if I have time.

What's your suggestion on how to maintain one? I'm looking into grabbing a reel mower for some days I can either cut the grass real early or real late.

The ground in parts of my yard are is still quite frozen. Don't touch it with power equipment until that's fully thawed or you will do more harm than good. If your yard is full sun, it may be thawed pretty deeply.

not sure if this is the right thread to ask as it looks like a lot of you maintain your own lawns.

but does anybody have any recommendations for a lawn care company they have used and were happy with it?
trying is the first step towards failure
