Default Submit Dashcam Violations to Cops?

    Hi guys,

So despite seeing endless idiots on the road every day, I usually just ignore them, but yesterday was sitting a dual turn red light and the guy in the far lane initially stopped, but then proceeded to run the red. I do have it all on the dashcam, but curious if there is any process to submit these videos to the cops and if it makes any difference, and if you, the crowd of beyond, would bother or if I should just forget it?

I don't care either way, more of a curiosity of how others feel about it and to see if there is an actual process.

I say it depends on what it is. I see people ripping it all the time (I'm guilty of this too), or driving on the shoulder in rush hour traffic cause they dont wanna wait. Or Etc. So hard to say. Nobody likes a narc either.

Turning right on red after stopping? You probably mean turning from a through lane.

Yea I saw one downtown yesterday. Turned left on a red light, after being stopped at the lights for 30 seconds.

No hazard to anyone (they did check both ways), but still broke a major rule.

My rule is that if someone causes another motorist to perform a evasive maneuver to avoid serious injury, the dashcam footage gets saved. Luckily have not had this happen yet.

Note that you will have to:

    a) burn a CD
    b) go to a local district CPS office
    c) fill out a witness statement
    d) possibly appear in court

(Ive been through b,c,d as a witness to a serious collision)

Wait, what are we talking about here? Turning from the "second" lane on a red? I do that all the time. Is that illegal?

Not if it's onto a one-way street. Otherwise, yes.

Isn't it only legal if it's curb lane to curb lane?

One way to one way it’s legal I believe as long as it’s not signed otherwise.

    I could be wrong.

Unless someone was going to take the time to guarantee the submitted video hasn't been doctored (and I can't see CPS devoting any resources to that at all), how could they charge or ticket anyone based on random, unverified video submissions?

There is no specific law about it, however the official government handbook says:

One-way onto a one-wayWhen it is safe and legal, turn from the lane nearest the left side of the road. Turn into the lane nearest to the left side of the road. Yield to pedestrians crossing to your left. When the light is red, if there are no signs prohibiting the turn, you may turn left on a red light from a one way to a one way after you come to a complete stop at the proper stopping location (stop line or crosswalk) and it is safe. This also applies to dual lane turns. Yield to pedestrians crossing to your left.
    and

Unless prohibited by a sign, at a dual right turn intersection, you may turn right on a red light after you come to a complete stop at the proper stopping point (stop line or crosswalk)
So if you got ticketed, you could use the official government literature as a defense.

Yeah, I always figured at dual, right was fine after a stop in all lanes, and same for one way to one way turning left. That's how I operate anyway.

No, this was a red light, left turn from a 2-way to one way. Not legal.

People do stupid shit on the road all the time. But you don't know their story. Thats where the problem is.

A few years back a friend had a bad stroke, lost movement on her right side and lost her speech. I threw her in the car and went to the hospital. Lets just say I was not driving like I going to the local church on a Sunday (My Honda turned into a Zonda). But from a outside perspective you would not know why I was driving like that.

Other times its more of a case that I have been dying to take a shit. So I have had to race home to use the loo.

That being said. I have personally reported something. But it was a incident involving myself and a third party who was driving like a idiot, driving too fast, cutting in last minute and forcing me off my lane.

If its something that does not involve you(unless its a blatant drunk driver). Its not one's job to police the streets. Leave that to the professionals. They are qualified for it.

At most (and at least heh) just put the video in the bad driver's car cam thread here and call it a day. I'd expect 3rd party video evidence to only be admissible for a crime, not a traffic violation.

I've had dash cams for about 10 years now... people do highly illegal shit that pisses me off on the road all the time, but generally if you let yourself cool off you realize it is too much hassle to take it to the police.

The only exception was back in Calgary when these church-going mother-fuckers would drive into my neighbourhood and then go BACKWARDS around the fucking traffic circle to circumvent the line turning left on the other side. Initially it just annoyed me, but one day I came around the corner in the circle on my way out and nearly had a head-on collision with one of them. The next Sunday I drove past the church crowd I recorded 2 people driving backwards and I submitted it to an officer on Beyond. I had to do a witness statement and also acknowledge that I could be called into court if needed. They both got ticketed in the end... not only that, word traveled fast in that church and people stopped doing it all together after that.
What kind of dash cam did you have 10 years ago?
Just curious what kind of cams were out there back then.

cops don't have a consistent or reliable way of collecting video footage anyway, last time i had a dash cam video i showed them on my phone but they didnt care to take a copy because there's not really a way to add it to the case.
