    Default Laptop USB C Charging

oh hai guize! have a bit of a newbie question on how USB C charging works on laptops. Laptop in question is a lenovo X1 carbon 6th gen. The only charge port on it is a the USB C port, and the supplied charge cord is a typical 120V-> Brick->cord setup with a USB C end. The supplied brick/cord work flawlessly.

HOWEVER, I was thinking that since this thing uses a USB C cord, I would be able to charge it with OTHER USB C chargers and cords, since I have several devices in my home that use this standard cord. So far, none of the cords/bricks that I use to charge my Samsung devices have worked. Not the generic 120V wall bricks, the Samsung branded Wall bricks, or the generic portable battery pack. I wouldn't mind if they charged somewhat slower, but they don't appear to be charging at all. What gives? I thought part of the deal with USB standards was the things were interchangeable? It's certainly worked that way for all the tablets and phones in my home.

    Teach me.

Check the output amperage on the laptop charger brick. I would bet it's significantly higher than the output amperage on your other generic samsung phone charger bricks. If the computer sees that the little phone brick can't supply enough amperage to support the current it draws during charging, it might just opt out (safety mechanism to avoid overheating the brick and setting your house on fire).

Just speculating, but I'll be surprised if this isn't the reason.

    >oh hai guize!

    hey Markham!

Check the voltage coming out of the X1 brick - its probably 19-20v or something.

This is incompatible with the 5V usb standard from other USB devices. Sounds like IBM went with a standard end, without standard specs .... strange.

First off, USB-C is sick and I can't wait for everything to get on it.

Your wall chargers meant for phones won't charge laptops, they charge at 5V up to 3A, so 15W.

Laptops are typically charged at 20V, and the lowest is generally 45W for ultrabooks, 65W for full sized laptops, etc.

I have a 90W USB-C charger that does everything... laptops, phones, portable batteries, etc.

This is pretty much bang on. I could "charge" my chromebook using my phone charger, but only if the chromebook was off, and it's was the slowest of trickle charges, but it won't charge my mac. That being said, my mac charger can easily charge my phone, and I can use generic laptop USB-C chargers on my mac with no issue.

Yeah, the Lenovo charger lists several voltages on it. [email protected], 15V@3A, 9V@2A, 5V@2A
I don't have my samsung chargers in front of me, but I think they top out at 9V for the adaptive fast charge on our newer samsung tablets.

It's too bad I can't trickle charge with "any" power brick. That would be great. This laptop has sufficient battery for "all day" use, but when I'm travelling, charging it overnight from a phone charger would be so convenient.

I have wall chargers meant for phones/tablets that do 30W, they aren't all 15W - depends entirely on the individual charging brick, they're all different. Now with Gallium Nitride, you are seeing tiny 30W chargers that are smaller than what comes with some phones.

I use this guy for travel now. Single unit that charges everything.

    https://www.anker.com/products/varia...-pd-5/A2056111

USB PD port supports 20V 30W for most usb c pd laptops. Also has all the supported voltages to fast charge iPhones and iPads.

I use the exact same thing, as well as this tiny 30W one for travel:

It's also possible that my cheaper USB cords don't support power delivery too. Hmmm.

when USB C first came out a google engineer had issues with crap cables that wouldn't have the correct resistor and it wouldn't charge right or would pull too much power. It fried his laptop. I wonder if that is still a problem, it was when the nexus 6p came out.

I carry a couple of cables for me when travelling.

    1. USB-C to USB-C, this leverages the USB-C PD port on the Anker to charge my MacBook and to fast charge my travel battery (also 30W PD so I can use it for MacBook).
    2. USB-C to Lightning, this leverages the USB-C PD port on the Anker to fast charge my iPhone and iPad.
    3. USB to Lightning, this leverages the USB port on the Anker to fast charge other accessories, such as AirPods
    4. USB to USB-Micro, this leverages the USB port on the Anker to fast charge my Beats, or slow charge my travel battery

With this combo, at night I typically use 2+3 to charge my iPad and iPhone in the hotel room. During the day, I use 1+3 to charge my AirPods when needed, and to keep the MacBook running.

On a flight, the charger goes away, the battery comes out, and I keep #2 handy to fast charge my iPad for my 24 hr flight. Everything else lasts the duration of travel. In a pinch I'll use #1 to keep the MacBook running if I use it enough on a flight (haven't yet).

The battery pack I have is this guy:

    https://www.aukey.com/products/26500...delivery-pb-y7

It's the maximum battery size allowable for flights around the world. I actually got checked on this in Frankfurt last month. It's one of 2 power banks available that can charge a MacBook.

Just to add to Rage2's comment.
I have the Anker Powerbank. Great product.

I use this for my travels, phone etc. It can charge USB C laptops too.

Anker Powerline's for all my USB PD stuff:

    https://www.amazon.ca/Anker-PowerLin...gateway&sr=8-3

I don't have anything that isn't USB-C anymore, so I only need 1 type of cable.

I bought this one earlier this year to simultaneously charge my laptop and Switch, for travel purposes, and to fast-charge my 26000mAH type-C powerbank. It's the only one I've found that has two Type-C outputs and it works like a charm.
