Default Concrete Driveway - turing all spotted recently

Just wondering WTF is going on.

The last week (or maybe longer) the driveway has turned all spotted like its recently rained even though it hasn't rained at all. These were taken this morning and it hasn't rained in days.

And then this photo shows where the roof overhang above is keeping the covered part free of spots where the uncovered areas are spotted. Red line is approximate location of the roof overhang.

Driveway is about a year old, was not spotted previously and hasn't been sealed or anything.

Poorly done skim coat/sealer, call the contractor back and get them to respray it.

Thanks. Would it be OK if we just sealed it ourselves? I was planning on sealing it before winter anyways.

Yeah, would be fine. Did you use spray or roll on sealer?

Just looking closer, it almost looks like grease spots?

The 2 larger spots in the second picture are oil.

The smaller spots are whats shown up recently.

I haven't sealed anything but we wanted to before winter. I would use the roll on stuff. Not sure what the contractor did during the pour but it was not sealed by anyone after it cured.

its probably water coming out of the concrete. with how much rain the province has had, it wouldn't shock me. my old employers building is doing the same thing.

I sent it to my Dad, who is all about concrete (he is one of the founders of Form & Build Supply). Anyway, he said that if it wasn't sealer (since your post says it hasn't been sealed yet) that it could be an alkaline reaction from UV (he said it's not uncommon for newish concrete).

    EDIT:

RE: rolling your own sealer, sure. It's easy. Make sure the driveway is clean and dry and roll it out in an even coat. I'd avoid the really shiny stuff since it'll turn your driveway into a skating rink lol

    Thanks dude!

Short of it looking kinda funny do I need to seal it or fix anything? And will it just go away over time?

Man, I haven't seen any driveways sprayed with a sealer in any of the new home construction I've been around. It's just pour, level, texture/trowels and a day or two later the forms come down.
    Will fuck off, again.

I agree (but not trying to step in Bavarian's toes). Exposed agg is sealed but I've never seen brushed concrete sealed and I never sealed any when I used to place & finish concrete. I worked for an idiot and I didn't do it for decades, but still...

Is brushed concrete EVER sealed, for reals?!??!

I've always sealed my concrete no matter if it was brushed or exposed. If I didn't my dad would have beat me. (Concrete guy for over 50 years.) My brother also has a concrete company and he always seals their work.

Well, there you go! That's a whole lot more definitive than my response. I always knew that fat, sweaty, mongoloid boss was a fat, sweaty, mongoloid.

The company that poured it came back and said that its most likely from lawn chemicals and difficult to remove them.

    It is 100% not that.

I could see maybe some spotting around the edges from when I've fertilized but there are spots in the middle of a 40' wide driveway. There is a 0% change that fertilizer has made its way 20' from the closest piece of lawn. Its also perfectly consistent everywhere except under the roof overhangs.

I don't buy that excuse. I sent the pic to my brother. I'll see what theories he has.

I have the same spots on my driveway and it's also on everyone else's driveways in my community as well.

Would be nice to know what's happening.

Brother thinks the finishers didn't trowel it out properly. Probably used just a steel trowel to speed things up. He also said that it is likely caused from moisture coming up through the aggregate. This last part I didn't quite understand: "If not properly looked after in the winter they could pop off".

Moisture coming up after the concrete being down for a year would be an oddball scenario.

The slab was poured in June 2018 so its been through a full winter already.

During the pour they started troweling it with this thing:

Right after they finished it looked like this:

And then by that evening it was looking fine:

Not really...apparently it is fairly common when crappy prep work was done underneath and poor drainage. I asked him if he should seal it but if you use regular sealer it will come out blotchy. He recommends a Penetrating sealer that won't change the color. It can be purchased at Hardrock developments....it ain't cheap but should keep the problem from coming back.
