Default rural cell coverage, which provider

I know west of the city is spotty for everyone, but I'd like to be able to get better rural coverage overall. Would be nice to get some signal when I'm out in Bragg creek or the other mountaini biking areas.

I'm on Rogers right now and it sucks. Is Telus better in rural areas?

In my experience Telus is better in rural Alberta than Rogers. My friend in the oil patch gave up on Rogers and switched to Telus due to all the dead spots around his work sites and said he saw an improvement in coverage (he mostly works in Alberta).

When I’m at west Bragg creek trail riding I get no service till I’m 5 min east of the parking lot. I’m with Telus.

+1 that Telus is definitely better in rural areas as a general rule. Much better in BC/Alberta at least.

That said I still use rogers.

If its just about keeping in touch i recommend a garmin inreach with a texting plan. Buddy of mine swears by it for hunting season.

Or wait for whatever Elon is coming up wiith lol.

Telus for sure. The only place you’ll get more than two bars with Rogers is in downtown Toronto

As previously mentioned, the Telus/Bell shared network is best for rural coverage (and their subsidiaries like Public/Koodoo & Virgin benefit as well). I can get good signal from a lot of hilltop areas in Maclean Creek, but your mtn bike experience may differ with tree coverage/line of sight.
You could also get a multi-sim version phone and get twice the coverage, but that's not a good reason unless you are desperate. Screenshot_20190825-212734.jpg

i assume telus has the same network performance as Rogers elsewhere, so whats the benefit of Rogers network?

No benefit out west here in BC/AB, Telus/Bell coverage is better everywhere except for some odd spots within the city.

On business trips in GTA I found Rogers coverage better for our offices. All of our sites have LTE failover so I had to specify the best provider wherever we operate.

Isn't this a moot point for most people in Alberta with the extended coverage agreement that was signed by Rogers, TELUS, Bell and Videotron?

I now get service with my Rogers device in places I never did a few years back and I know I'm on another carrier's network because it'll say Rogers-Ext on the top of my phone's screen. Now I suppose that not every plan may include this extended coverage but it sure is nice to know that I've got cellular service pretty much anywhere I go now.

    Just an FYI to everyone...

If your phone has horrible Rogers service (struggling to stay connected), but has full LTE service with other providers, it'll still prefer Rogers over the Rogers-EXT networks. Whenever I'm in Bragg Creek or the area around it, I'll go in to the manual network selection and choose one of the Rogers-EXT network selections. After doing this I'll have full LTE Service via Rogers-EXT via Telus/Bell. Make's a HUGE difference...

Keep in mind, if you do this you need to remember to go back to network selection and set it to "Automatic" when you leave.

As for travelling in other areas, on occasion you may need to pull the manual network selection and toggle between 2-4 "Rogers-EXT" networks depending on the area where you are. I noticed it struggles in choosing the best one a lot of the time. Going through them manually can significantly better your signal/reception.

And it seems quite apparent that Freedom Mobile is not a part of this agreement because of all the call issues their customers seem to have.

It hurts me that you didn't say "Telus/Koodoo/Bell/Public"
We must seek to understand each other, and even when we cannot, remain kind.
Public Mobile is cool, you want to be cool, don't you?

Koodo is Telus, who shares a lot of towers with Bell

from my experience dealing with 70+ Bell modems in AB, Telus performs better in Western Canada and Bell in Eastern Canada even though they share.
Bell still has pretty good coverage all over AB but our operators are having better signal with their personal Telus devices than our corporate Bell device.s

No. In AB, Rogers is only a bit better than Freedom but way behind Telus/Bell.

Telus/Bell is the best network in AB because it all runs on Huawei gears.

Freedom roams on Telus as well but it's neither here or there in gray areas. A lot of Freedom's problem is while you are on their own network.
