Default Trucks, unibody or body on frame

A side conversation for the Tesla truck thread - does a vehicle have to be body on frame to be considered a truck or can it be a unibody?

The Honda Ridgeline, Subaru Baja and Brat, Dodge Rampage, VW Rabbit pickup, they are all unibody based trucks if you wish to call them a truck.

But are they really a truck because they are not body on frame vehicles. Personally, unibody trucks are not trucks to me as they, for the most part, do not have the cargo hauling capabilities of a body on frame truck and a truck, to me, needs to be able to carry stuff.

Now that all said, a lot of modern body on frame trucks are sporting beds that are under 6 feet in length which kind of takes them a bit farther from what a truck is in the real sense that you can haul stuff in your bed, just not smallish trinkets.

So a truck, body on frame or unibody or either?

Unibody trucks have some incredible capability compared to "real body-on-frame trucks" of ten or fifteen years ago. So maybe the heavy duty end of things is still body-on-frame, but eh, it's a truck if it has an open bed, that's my opinion.

Things are moving towards unibody; cheaper to make and usually better handling. I don't think a frame is a defining feature of a truck.

Really most people who want a truck don't need something on a frame, they just want something with a bed to do occasional work around the house or move recreational toys around with. I am surprised the truck-cars from Australia haven't started popping up here. I'd be all over an updated version of the Subaru Baja.

Asides from the Ridgeline, which trucks are unibody?

Rivian appears to be a body on frame vehicle, pic of chassis below...

    New slogan:
"Not the truck you want, but the truck you'll probably get, Ridgeline!"

I call anything with an open box a truck (the exceptionsbeing open box vans, and ute's). One of my peeves is people calling their SUV a truck.

Body on frame SUVs I could consider a truck. Or maybe theyre suv's and people driving Highlanders shouldn't call their crossover an SUV

What about the Jeep Commanche? It was both a unibody/frame style truck

I have a relative who calls ANY SUV a "truck" including smaller ones like Acura RDX.

You mentioned Rabbit pickup. I'd love one of those!
Someone in here must have a fancy, modified Rabbit Truck?
