I don’t think any of the half ton diesels are really towing beasts from what I have read.

Serious half ton towing ecoboost is where you want to be.

I think it will come in AT4 if TB is a need. Also from what I understand there are 2 trail boss trims so maybe one has and the other doesn’t? I know for 19 you couldn’t get TB with a 6.2 for example but that should be changing for 20.
TB build and config is already up in the US and still only 4.3 or 5.3L for that trim level, I’ve also read for sure GM isn’t putting the 3L in TB trim levels. Either way all of these trucks are too expensive for my pleb ass haha.

Well 2020 AT4 is definitely available with Dmax in Canada. So same same as trail boss.

The problem with the new duramax is going to be the same as the ford and ram. 460lbft is good, but it’s no scream better than what you can get out of a gasser. But with only 277HP it’s going to run out of steam at the top end when towing.

Essentially all they have accomplished is making super weak gas engine, with all the inconvenience of diesel. If all you do is drive the speed limit unloaded it’s probably fine. But then again so would the 4Cyl lol.

Apparently the 3L Duramax in crew cab 4x4 form is rated for 10.5L/100km combined in Canada which is pretty impressive. I like the idea of going to a smaller diesel as I may downsize my trailer and won’t really need a huge 6.6L Duramax to tow, and I’m basically driving around unloaded 95% of the time. The first review I read said it feels as strong as the 6.2L to about 110km/h then it falls off, and I’m certainly not buying a truck to race around in. Reliability is probably my biggest fear.

Easy, horsepower sells cars. Torque wins races.

Did you even read my post, or any of the first page? I'm not going to the track with my 1/2 ton truck and camping trailer.

Is that even really better than the 5.3 with 10spd?

Don’t get me wrong, I think they are cool engines. I’m just not sure they have any real appreciable benefit.

Okay to add useful information, and something I don't think that has been added:

Rear end ratio in whatever you're buying makes a big difference in usability of the torque the engine produces. You can have two 1500 trucks, same motor and transmission one truck with a 3.36 ratio the other truck with a 3.73 the 3.73 ratio will kill the 3.36 ratio truck pulling a load up a hill.

However the trade off becomes fuel economy as the more RPM's you spin at 110km/h the worse the fuel economy. I sell class 8 trucks and we spec trucks with pretty much the same engine and transmission combination and then change the rear end ratio to accommodate whatever the customers needs are, highway truck 3.08 ratio, oil field 3.90 or 4.11+

It's not that simple comparing Ford to Chev to Dodge rear end ratio's as the transmission final drive changes manufacture to manufacture. Which then also affects pulling ability and fuel economy combined with the rear end ratio installed in the truck.

The 5.3 only has the 8 speed though. I have a friend with one and he gets around 11.5 highway under ideal conditions. The Ecodiesel I towed with was getting 11.3L/100km towing into a headwind at 115km/h. I don’t find the 5.3 feels very strong if I’m honest. The 6.2 though I adore.

I don’t think the 8sp is sticking around.
