For me, it is the idea of being up off the ground. I find that with a regular air matress, it doesn't really insulate you from the ground on a cooler night, and one side of me is warm, the other side gets cold. That gets solved with a foam matress, but then unless you are on perfectly flat ground, you still feel every surface pebble, tree root, etc... With these tents, you have a perfectly flat floor that you can use a nice foam matress on, and be comfortable and warm. You are also not as worried about rain and mud. It is also aready installed and can be set up in 2-3 mins versus 20 mins with a traditional tent.

There are a good many convenience factors with them.

I suspect the people who are truly using these setups for actual camping are not the type of campers that have a need to go for an ice cream while out camping.

Would allow you to sleep on a real bed... air mattresses suck. Also probably some cool factor too... no worse than the cargo boxes on show cars that will never see a ski hill parking lot

Guarantee it’s more comfortable too.

So almost none of them around here. Most of the owners are definitely the type to go get ice cream while camping.

I plan on buying a trailer, maybe even over this winter, but I also want to have the overland setup. @baygirl will never go with me in the roof top tent, but will in a trailer. The overland setup is for me, when I want to go out with my friends for a couple days or on a longer road trip and save on the hotel.

In the end, everything is going to have pros and cons, and I think the overland setup is a perfect fit for me, while the trailer is good for a family excursion.
