I’m still not understanding why the roof top tent versus a normal tent.
Unless it really is just for Instagram photos.
I figure none are for sale because people must mortgage them and they are all underwater.

For me, it is the idea of being up off the ground. I find that with a regular air matress, it doesn't really insulate you from the ground on a cooler night, and one side of me is warm, the other side gets cold. That gets solved with a foam matress, but then unless you are on perfectly flat ground, you still feel every surface pebble, tree root, etc... With these tents, you have a perfectly flat floor that you can use a nice foam matress on, and be comfortable and warm. You are also not as worried about rain and mud. It is also aready installed and can be set up in 2-3 mins versus 20 mins with a traditional tent. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
There are a good many convenience factors with them.

They prevent your tent from being run over by a rhinoceros, obviously. Perfect for Canada where every mammal can climb. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Are they just flattened down for travelling, like a pop-up trailer? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Feel like the convenience of setup is negated by having to take down every time you want to get an ice cream
I suspect the people who are truly using these setups for actual camping are not the type of campers that have a need to go for an ice cream while out camping. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Will fuck off, again.
I'm not trying to hate. I was trying to be funny.
If you think the ground is cold, wait. Until you have air under your tent. That's a fuck of a lot colder.

Doesn't cold ground conduction cool you off more than cold air convection?

Would allow you to sleep on a real bed... air mattresses suck. Also probably some cool factor too... no worse than the cargo boxes on show cars that will never see a ski hill parking lot
Maybe (probably) I'm just a cheap bastard. $2000 for a tent seems high if it doesn't come with someone in it to give hand jobs.

You have got to be able to buy a shitty tent trailer for 2 grand that you would be ok with dragging through the bush.
Guarantee it’s more comfortable too.
Edit:
250 bones. Think of how nice one could be for 2k

So almost none of them around here. Most of the owners are definitely the type to go get ice cream while camping. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I plan on buying a trailer, maybe even over this winter, but I also want to have the overland setup. @baygirl will never go with me in the roof top tent, but will in a trailer. The overland setup is for me, when I want to go out with my friends for a couple days or on a longer road trip and save on the hotel.
In the end, everything is going to have pros and cons, and I think the overland setup is a perfect fit for me, while the trailer is good for a family excursion.

Brother, you know I won't steer you wrong. Let's go for wings and I'll get you set up.

I wonder which is worse for trip fuel economy. Tiny tent trailer, or roof top tent pushing air.

The biggest problem with the roof tents is that they look silly when you're parking at safeway or some shit.
