Default Question about staggered setup on awd

    Got a question about a staggered setup...kinda.

So my car is awd and runs a factory staggered setup:

    18 x 8 front (225/40/18)

    18 x 18.5 rear (255/35/18)

I get the whole circumference thing and blah blah about a staggered setup on awd. My question though is this:

Can I run the following setup:

    18 x 8.5 front (225/40/18)

    18 x 8.5 rear (255/35/18)

I know the front tires will be a little stretched but it isnít anything significant to be concerned about. If I run a 18 x 8.5 setup all around with different tire sizes, will it still be fine or will it throw off rotation? Ideally i know itíd be fine to run 225/40/18 all around.

    Thanks.

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

normally by the stretched amount u profile will no longer be 40 your rear tire wont effect anything and since they are 40 front and 35 rear your all around rotation will not be effected by that much rotation and you should be fine

    Thanks.

There are a few factors that make it tough to answer generically. Basically speaking, if you take a wider tire and squeeze it onto a narrower wheel you are making the tire slightly taller than normal by squeezing in the sidewalls causing the middle to crown more. Obviously this is creating an indifference and the rule of thumb with AWD is to have as little indifference as possible. Some all wheel drives are are more sensitive to indifference than others. Are the tires you using new or worn a bit? If they are worn a bit are the fronts and rears the same amount of wear? If the fronts have more tread than the backs then it may already be really close, and even if it is off a bit it may be close enough not to cause an issue.

Mismatched a tiny little bit will not just automatically cause some crazy catastrophic failure, but it can definitely cause premature wear to related components as depending on the system, the car could be mis-distributing power around confused by the sizing variance. Again, not going to make everything just fall apart, but it is not optimal. That may or may not be a concern to you but you should always consider things like that.

    Thanks TB.

I'm using a skinnier tire and putting it on a wider rim - wider by 0.5 only - 8.5 vs. 8.0.

Tires are practically new all around - about 3000km on them as i only used it last season for winter.

Would that still be ok then?

why are you wanting to do this? Is it for looks? Cause you can achieve the same look of wider in the back with spacers.

If I owned your car I personally would set it up square for winter. That said, even though I can't say with a 100% degree of certainty of course, I wouldn't be scared of what you are suggesting but it would always be in the back of my mind and I would be constantly paying attention for issues.

Winter setup. I bought a set of OEM rims for my car from some guy that had the exact same car and I assumed it was a staggered setup as they usually come in a staggered setup...I didn't notice he ran it with 18 x 8.5 all the way around, so this isn't for cosmetic, rather I just don't wanna buy another set of rims haha.

Thanks @tirebob . Since I already have the rubber....I might just go ahead and bit the bullet and run it square all around - so either buy another pair of 225/40/18 rubber or just go and buy the matching front rims that are staggered.
