Default Click on wrong button, have to reformat windows 10.

Dammit, I temporarily slipped up and clicked on "Mark as Spam" button on an email. Now its opening up 8 instances of the browser, only one of which I can see - which means of course its compromised.

Ahh well, it was time to reformat Windows 10 anyhow. Damn to this day you can still mess things up with a momentary lapse in judgement.

My dad recently got an email that said someone authorized a $3k charge on his credit card. Instead of calling the credit card company he tried to open the attachment.

The attachment failed to load on his android phone so he made sure to go open it on his windows comp.

Because of stuff like this, I've migrated him to ChromeOS.

I don’t think this necessarily means you’re compromised

I have chrome open with 2 tabs right now and task manager shows 17 instances of chrome.

I think each extension that is running in Chrome shows up as another instance, I always see way more in task manager than I have open.

This isnt 2001 with and Windows 98SE and the Melissa virus. You dont need to wipe and reinstall after a bug.

There is nothing to indicate you INSTALLED anything on your PC (not that its always necessary, but definitely makes it worse).

Run a Malwarebytes free, full scan (not a quick scan) and a free ESET online scanner. If those two dont fint anything, I would not bother with anything else.

BTW anyone using ISP emails is just shooting themselves in the foot. Shaw/Telus have horrible, 2004-era email systems and dont filter out most of the garbage, or if they do - a piss poor job.

Gmail is 99x superior to ISP and will mark, correctly, junk like this as spam.

Forward your ISP emails to a Gmail account and your life will be 99x better.

Thread title is very misleading - you don't need to immediately reformat your PC haha. Lots of things to check first, most have already been mentioned, and if nothing comes up, you're probably fine.

I am glad to be here for the first time ol' Zenny has overreacted to a simple situation with a complex "solution". Bookmarked.

Ok, back from reformat, damn you hackers.

The dead giveaway that my browser got hijacked is that it no longer automatically goes to Calgary weather, it instead goes to a page that has a window that you can only click "OK" on. Control alt delete and force shutdown, and it still comes back, clear browser, still comes back.

I'd rather reformat than risk a rollback not working properly. New Windows default seems to have my taskbar as light blue? Can't remember if I changed that a while ago.

Shaw is using Zimbra 8.6.0_GA_1240 (build 2018-10-19-052422)
Their spam filter has been 99.99% spot on for me, and active sync support is great.

Yep and when they have their regular outages (like Telus, for almost a week in some cases) and your business is down, they dont give a fuck.

Their IMAP has multiple issues on multiple client setups and then they make a change in the back end (eg. SMTP server or auth type) and suddenly customers who have been imaping for years start to not get emails, etc.

Absolute garbage compared to Gmail. Try sending an email close to the attachment limit through an IMAP setup and see how long it lasts - oh is their max attachment size anywhere near 30MB yet?
