Question, why even bother with a furnace filter at all?

To protect the furnace from excessive dust.

Do those “cheapest filters money can buy” even accomplish that goal?

Yes, to some extent. The light/smaller stuff does get in eventually and will need vacuuming, etc.

Thanks for the input. Guess I'll be returning the Kirkland 2200/merv 12s.
Besides big box retailers, any other places local or online that sell merv 8s at a decent price?

Edit: these seem like a decent buy?

I accidentally bought the wrong filters on Amazon before Christmas and the seller decided it would be easier to refund me than to get them shipped back. Anyone know where I can donate these to where they might actually get used? They have a raised edge on one side which I didn't see when ordering.

Going to grab these for now, and order a 12 pack of MERV 8 from furnacefilters.ca

Interesting, I have never given this any thought. My furnace uses a 20x25x5" filter. I think I currently have a Honeywell one from Home Depot. They are only ~$40 each. I usually change every 3 months. I have one of those variable speed furnaces so it is always on a bit but I never considered that the type of filter might lower the life of the furnace. I am sure it can't make much of a difference...
No filter type of that size will add any resistance to worry about. Just change it 2-3 times a year and you are good to go.

I've mentioned it before, but Dafco and BGE filters are local manufacturers in Calgary on Blackfoot Tr. You can buy a box of filters there for 1/4 to 1/3 the price of Amazon or any retail outlet.

Thanks again for posting this. Looks like there is BGE out here as well, in Burnaby. I'll be in touch with them on Monday and probably just buy a case of them.

Yes also thank you. I recalled this and was going to ask you to mention it, again.

I get mine from Sinclair Supply here in the city, their pricing is great and it's local. They carry Camfil Farr 3030 which is a Mev8 and they are around $6 a filter the last time I bought a dozen.
