    Default Wood Stoves?

Anyone on here have a wood burning stove?

We are replacing our old furnace soon, and the new furnace will direct vent out side of house. This will leave the old chimney chase empty. Was thinking of installing wood stove in basement and running new chimney straight up through old chase. Would be hiring a fireplace company for the installation.

Plan to use the stove as supplemental heat source. It's currently unfinished basement, with open staircase leading to main floor and 2nd story. Heat can go up stairs and radiantly heat main floor from below. Can also run the furnace fan to distribute heat throughout house.

There are so many brands and models of stoves to choose from, kinda daunting figuring out which one to go with.

Leaning towards non-catalytic to keep the learning curve down and make it so wife or kids are able to feed/start fire on their own.

If anyone has experience with any brands of stoves they'd recommend or to stay away from would be great to hear.

I can't comment on brands or type, but I do know your house insurance will go up with an installation.

I love wood burning stoves, but just can't justify the price and space required.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Wood stove throw out a ton of heat, but they also suck in a ton of cold air, far more than a furnace, so you don't come out as far ahead as you may think. Plus, usually, they let the cold air stream in when you aren't burning, so it's a strong negative when you aren't home.

I love wood stoves, but they aren't perfect.

You could consider a biomass furnace. I think they are catching on in Europe with some decent and more reliable tech

Only goes up of you use as a primary source of heat from what I'm told. Out house has a built in fireplace upstairs and downstairs. We only really use ours around Christmas .

Something that was new to me in Europe are pellet burners. I don't recall seeing them in Alberta but it's been a while since I've lived there.

I think they're great as a heating source (though not as nice to look at as a normal wood fireplace). https://friendlyfires.ca/product-cat...pellet-stoves/

I moved to a new place with a wood burning furnace/ stove. Haven't used it yet, but it's ready, I was waiting for one really cold day to see if it makes a difference.

There is no way burning wood in a stove is beneficial when you have natural gas available.

I know people who do it when the alternative is heating oil. But those people live in the bush.

It’s not like a hearth where you are doing it for the ambience. It’s a stove in your basement lol.

First off, shout out to Arcticcat552 for his donation of wood logs from his cut down trees before he built his garage/man-cave! They made great firewood and it was greatly appreciated Sir

We also have two wood burning fireplaces and for the one in the basement, we're looking at adding a Lopi brand insert sold through TH Fireplaces. TH also carries a large selection of stoves and their sales person Jason was very knowledgeable and experienced. One of things we like about the Lopi products is their Green Start ignition system, which uses a hot coil and compressed air to get the fire started. Once wood is put in the box and the air controls are set, anyone can easily just press the button and get the fire going. No more newspaper, matches, etc to get it going. https://www.lopistoves.com/products/wood/

We had plans to add one of these to our build and we were fine with the quoted cost.

    https://stuvamerica.com/en/products/stuv-16/

The "pros" had only quoted the unit itself and when we told them to install, they sent a new quote that doubled because install wasn't included in the first price. So we changed plans.

The Stuv does come in an option to "insert" it into an existing location. It's the most modern looking stove we could find and has a price that reflects that.
