My 8 year old wants a drone to play with but I don't know much about the different brands and what would be a good buy vs junk.
Somethine entry level works...maybe under $100?

I bought one for my wife's cousins son from the source for $30 called a Mosquito. He is 10 and loves it as it has a trick button you can press and it does flips and rolls. Still going strong after a year of abuse and crashing into everything imaginable.
How big do you want it to be?
These are tiny but insanely stable and simple to fly - they even have altitude hold and automatic takeoff/landing and one touch flips/tricks which is probably super fun for a kid. Basically they fly just like a DJI drone, and they have beginner and advanced modes (neither are crazy):

They are fun in the house, and they fly surprisingly well outdoors when it's calm. It has a built in battery and charges via micro USB in about 20-30 mins. Best for beginners IMHO, and it's getting cold outside and lithium batteries don't like the cold so you probably want something that works indoors too. It has built in prop bumpers and is plenty durable.
One step up from that is something like the Holy Stone HS170:

Bit bigger, bit more powerful, and has swappable batteries. Also has altitude hold, which is probably the biggest contributor to how easy it is to fly.
And the DJI/Ryze Tello is easily the best drone around $100 and has a usable camera on it:

They go on sale for $99 regularly if you aren't in a rush.
And if you're looking for something a little different, these R/C Helicopters are pretty neat and dead simple to fly indoors (they can't bank/roll) - it's fun to fly around see what you can land on:

I either own or have owned all of the above, lots of great stuff out there.

Costco has pretty big drones on sale for $68.
...
Wait...I thought all drones were supposed to have a camera? But I guess not from what it seems.
Drone mostly just refers to a "quadcopter", usually with some features that make it ridiculously easy to fly. A lot of the cheaper ones are made both with and without cameras, but you're right all of the higher end ones like DJI, Yuneec, Parrot, etc. typically have cameras. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member.
