If you are looking at a 2018 right now, is it a 2 year old car? or a 1 year old car?
Does it tick over a year the second 2020s start arriving? or does that not make a difference.

It's two years old in model age. That's what I go by, not calendar.

I say stupid shit all the time.
In the eyes of the market, a 2018 is 2 years old the instant you can physically buy a 2020. If you had to sell that 2018 shortly after you bought it, and 2020's were out, nobody is going to care that you bought it a month before the 2020's landed - it will need to be depreciated accordingly.
That’s how I got a good deal on the C63. Brand new car became a year old overnight. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

The second it hits August of that year, the model year before I consider to be two model years old. IE August 2019, 2018 models I would consider two years old.
A friend was really pleased with his then-new 2013 F10 M5... First one in the city, blah blah blah...
When I got a 2014 a few months later, he didn't seem to appreciate me calling his car a year old

I distinctly recall ads for the "1995" Ford Windstar airing during hockey in 1993 (if not even late 1992)! I thought there should've been a law preventing that.
It's the bullshitingest system in modern consumer goods.
Infinity did the same thing, I forget which year it was, but if you bought a new G35 at the right time you got a 2 year head start. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I hate to say it, but Tesla does this better. I think if it is manufactured in the tent before Dec 31, its THAT year. Jan 1 change-over.
Also, the brits refer to cars by their "plating year" or some such...basically when it gets registered I think. Although that system wouldn't properly acknowledge MY changes.
It depends on the manufacturer. Some roll out their 2020's early in the year whereas others do it wait.
I'm still waiting for the 2020 CX-5 to drop to see if the 2019's have any deals. Still no official release on the changes either although its pretty much confirmed rumors of nothing major
That's correct, it depends also on the digit of your vin, but they don't deal with MY like other manufacturers. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Dealer "bought" the car I'm looking at December 31, 2018. So technically it's used with new car mileage and 10 months of warranty burnedThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Definitely considered 2 yrs old in the car world. For example, I am looking at new car right now and while it's 2019.5 build, technically since 2020's will roll out soon it will be considered a year old = a more aggressive deal.

One of the Ford dealers here was doing this with Raptors. They couldn't get new ones as they aren't a SVT dealer, so they would buy them from the US dealers and put them on the lot as "new" even though the warranty is ticking away each day. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Tesla absolutely does not do this better. Go try to figure out what version of AP, motors (On the S/X), hell even seats a used Tesla has without seeing it in person. Even with a VIN, it's a difficult task because they don't hard cut off hardware revisions. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I like the traditional MY designation because like others have mentioned, there's great deals to be had on new cars because of MY. The first year McLaren MP4-12C's were dumped onto the market pretty late, in August as that year for MY designation. 2 months later the new MY was available, and people got 30-40% off on the first year models. They were able to drive them and flip them for the same price 2 years later.
Fun fact, MY is something that manufacturers and dealers just live with. There's really no advantages in the scope of actually selling cars, if anything there are disadvantages to the bottom line. The primary purpose is for supply chain management. The shift to fall being the new model year is to align with new TV seasons back in the day, as well as advantages in resource management because summer holidays.

I dont have a problem with the practice at all. In the case of a domestically sourced vehicle, dealers will do it so they can utilize manufacturer support on a rebate before that support expires. It's also why, no matter what the circumstances, I confirm the in-service date and warranty dating on every vehicle I buy, right in the sales agreement. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member.
