    Default Anybody just not voting?!

A lot of passionate posters on both sides on here arguing back and forth literally every day.

Just curious if anyone here is considering just not voting for whatever reason... I'm considering it for the first time in my life.

I probably won't, but not because of lack of interest/passion. It would mainly be because my riding is Michelle Rempel and she pretty much has no chance of losing and would rather spend the half hour at home with my family and newborn.

IMHO it's better to vote for the "best of the worst" or whatever your most preferred candidate is among those who actually have a chance of winning, even if you don't like any candidate.

Look at what happened in the USA - so many people didn't bother voting in 2016 because they thought Hillary had it in the bag...and then look what happened lol.

Every vote counts, but I respect whatever people decide to do.

Good reason.... but only valid if the likely winner is the one you want lol

I think this is lot of people right now in Alberta. It's going blue either way, why bother wasting time when I sit at home on my couch. On Monday, I work all day then go play hockey, I don't have time or motivation to go.

It really is true that the more things change the more things stay the same. No matter what side you're on, is it really going to make a difference whether the Cons get in or the Libs, especially now since it's looking like a minority government?

Ditto, except for the newborn part.

No chance in hell Rempel will lose.

From my point of view anyways, there is usually 2 parties/candidates that are likely to get the majority of the votes. So, you pick the one you hate the least and vote for them because one of them is getting in regardless, so if you can't help your preferred candidate win, you might as well help increase their representation if possible rather than a stink vote or not voting. Until we get ranked choice voting which is an arguably flawless way to go about it, that is the best anyone can do.

cons just want a majority, its obvious they'll win, but if its not a majority then they don't really win because it'll be a left coalition, honestly if the liberals and NDP would just merge they'd have a way better chance, they vote split every time. (not saying i want that to happen, just an observation)

What I'm saying is... does it really matter either way?

Is a pipeline going to be built? Maybe.

Is a pipeline going to be blocked? Maybe.

Will neither happen for 4 years, probably.

not really, buncha liars fulfillign their own self interest with our money...
the only thing in this entire election that slightly piqued my interest is the NDP guy saying he'd introduce proportional representation, i dont like how he'd implement it because i dont think it'd work, but there definitely needs to be talk about reforming the whole system.

IMO our municipal is something i'd like to see at a federal level, no parties, just individuals running for proportional representation, so the winners can vote for the people who voted them in, not for the party leader's personal interests.

I never vote. It's a matter of statistics vs economic utility.

There is zero chance (well as close to zero as you can get) that your vote will impact the election. So by definition it's a low-utility activity. Going to vote would, literally, be the worst use of my time.

Plenty of fascinating studies on the topic - from the statistical impact of your vote to why people vote. (spoiler: it's because of social pressure.)

Pretty sad mentality in this thread. No wonder the NDP was able to win Alberta and Trump was able to win the US elections.

I think it's a societal obligation to get informed and cast a ballot, even if you believe your riding is locked in or you hate all the leaders. The popular vote still has some meaning even if not in a practical sense. For most people, it takes less than 30 minutes to go vote - I'm certain if you're too lazy to vote you're wasting 30 minutes of your time elsewhere every day.

If you lean towards any one party or leader in the slightest, you should vote.

If you seriously don't have one preferred candidate, you should still go and spoil your ballot just as a sign you're participating in democracy (and all the history, fighting, and freedoms that come with it).

Boils my blood when people don't vote, say "I don't care", or "I don't have time". People fought and died for our freedom to do things like this.

They should roll a federal lottery into the election to bring up the voter turnout. Winner gets their taxes returned from previous year.

And que the people who need to make those who don't vote out to be bad people.

Don't like it? Too bad. Move on.

That's just completely untrue, you give other people shit for being uninformed... the ONLY reason NDP won was because of a conservative vote split, combined they'd have had well over 50% of the vote and would have won.. it was their own greed that cost them.
