Google RCS: Rich Communication Service - poor adoption continues with Pixel 4.

The ONLY thing I really liked about the various iPhones I've had previously is the iMessage app and how it flawlessly handles group chats, wifi-only transmissions, as well as sms. Google has been working on a "Rich Communication Service" (RCS) protocol for a while, but it hasn't been rolled out across all carriers, handsets, regions etc.

Be nice if that gets sorted soon, although I have to wonder if the carriers are trying to protect sms revenue?

RCS has been working awesome on my S9+, but unfortunately out of all my contacts, only one other has it turned on... I'm surprised it's taken this long for the phone vendors to get it working and develop the support in to the messaging apps.

Group texts are a hit and miss proposition for me on my S7. Seems to depend who starts the chain.

The fact that providers can’t really charge for this makes adoption impossible. Why spent money implementing for zero revenue? Hell even cross provider RCS is broken to shit.

I’ve posted about this before, the fact that google wanted their open chat platform to be controlled by providers will just add to the long line of abandoned chat platforms. Can anyone keep track of all of them? Talk, chat, Allo, Hangout, spaces, hangout chat, RCS. Any one I’ve missed haha.

The whole hangouts getting discontinued this year and google chat being called hangout chat and still not integrated into gmail’s chat interface has been hilariously fun for our IT teams trying to phase it out before it’s EOL this month. Fucking google lol.

Isn't there a thread on this already? Most people seem to use WhatsApp because it's already the best platform for a lot of things and one of the only good cross-platform texting apps, especially for media sharing. I don't think many people really care about RCS or even know what it is. It's a disaster IMO.

If you're currently using a P2, there is a lot more than just that Literally everything has been improved substantially from the P2.

From what I have read, Pixel sales have gone up dramatically year-over-year and Google expects the P4 to be their biggest seller yet given that it is the most significantly upgraded Pixel yet. By Q2 Google had doubled YOY Pixel sales. They are apparently one of the fastest growing smartphone products in NA. Unlikely that they will sell less than the 3 based on historical trends and an even stronger offering this year, but time will tell. It started out as kind of a niche product when they moved away from the Nexus line into the Pixel line but sales have been increasing rapidly. Introducing the 3/3a was a huge boost for them as well.

I'm still using Hangouts. I'm reluctantly adopting Whatsapp, but I like to use desktop versions, and the whatsapp web is a little lacklustre.

Hangouts starts getting turned off this month. Unless you're talking about the new Hangouts Chat, but that's not free with every gmail account like Hangouts was.

Well, RCS hit my Public/Telus Moto G7 Play this morning. Got a notification that "chat features" and wifi texting were now available. It won't make any difference until more of my network has this set up, but I think it will be nice. Group chats were such a gongshow between carriers/devices even with everyone on android.

Is this feature going to be the end of any kind of "texting fees" for all carriers on all plans? Makes sense to me. Voice and data should be all that matters.

WhatsApp just hit 2B active users, almost 30% of the world's population. By contrast, if you asked 10 people whats RCS was, I'd be surprised if 1/10 have ever heard of it haha. To date I still don't know a single person who uses something other than WhatsApp for their cross-platform group chats. It's just such a easy to use, polished platform with the best media sharing capabilities.

I did notice that the one person who still sends 'traditional' texts to me has a different looking thread now, maybe that is RCS?
