Home Addition

I have the opportunity to purchase a "fixer upper" home in an established community at a very reasonable price.
However, the square footage does not meet our families needs at this time, so we are contemplating moving forward.

Has anyone done a home addition recently? If so, would you be comfortable sharing your experience?
From what I have gathered, with minimal initial research, a Building Permit is only required, as long as the addition does not exceed 400sq feet.
This would likely meet our needs.

Obviously, I will be reaching out to General Contractors at some point, but we are just at the very early stages of deciding if we want to pursue.
