Default Cost to fix up laptop

Have a older laptop that all of a sudden didn't want to boot and stayed flashing black, couldn't find c drive and desktop.

It was determined that the drive is fucked and needed one of these :

What is a fair press to have installed this, recovered data and a fresh install of windows 10?

    1) Do you NEED 500gb on your laptop? There are so many cloud options nowadays. If you can get away with less and put backup data onto an external your SDD cost could be a lot cheaper (like $30)
    2) What makes you sure it's the HD and not the motherboard, RAM etc?
    3) Depending on your laptop, it may be one door with 2 screws to do the replacement, or it may be a full tearapart. This would determine the time commitment for the installation part.
    4) If it is truly your hard drive that is shot, data may cost hundreds to recover.

If the laptop already comes with Windows 10 then the drive install and OS install won't be much time wise.

Recovery of drive data could be another thing though depending on the state of the drive.

I'd say 1-1.5 hours and most of that would be waiting for the OS to install and ensure drivers are correct.

I took it to someone and they diagnosed it to be that. Got quoted 175 for the labor and wondering if that is the going average or not?

Get your hard drive out, put it in a USB caddy and connect to another PC to confirm it's dead before buying a new drive.

If drive is dead and you are looking for data recovery, it's not guaranteed and it's big $.

EDIT: $175 to install a new drive and windows is fair. That should not include data recovery tho.

Ok cool, so regardless it sounds like its a fair price. The drive was on its way out, he got it to boot with some errors but for 175 it sounds within the ball park so i'm good with that.
