Default Does Memory Express do BIOS upgrades on their mobos?

I'm looking to do a bit of an upgrade to my desktop pretty shortly and I'm leaning towards going with the AMD Ryzen 5 3600. I like the Gigabyte B450 AORUS Pro WiFi or Gigabyte B450 AORUS Elite but I'm reading these (generally) won't post out the box with a 3rd gen CPU so I need a 2nd gen to perform a firmware upgrade, which I don't have.

It's been a while since I've bought any hardware from them, but what's the likelihood their boards will have the latest firmware? Can they perform the upgrade for me before I pick up?

Absolutely they can do the firmware upgrade. They'll probably charge you though.

are you picking up the mobo and cpu from them?
from what I recall, if you buy the hardware for them they can install mobo, cpu and ram for you to verify that it works, just cant remember if it was free or at a cost.

best bet is to call them.

I think you mean the BIOS. You just need a 2000 series (or lower AM4 compatible) CPU to do it, so either AMD will mail you one for free and you can do it yourself, or Memory Express can do it.

Depending on the build date of the board, some are updated - most manufacturers put stickers or other markings on the box to note that they have been updated and are 3000 series compatible.

Why not just call Memory Express and ask them what their process is? They won't charge you if you're buying both from them and are getting them to mount it anyway, but if you just bring them the mobo and CPU, they will probably charge you.

Duh, right. I meant BIOS. It's been so long since I've done a build, every device I've tinkered with since then uses "firmware" haha

Yeah, I was gonna pop on over there once I figure out all my components. I just wasn't sure if that was a thing that's done or what to expect.

    Yeah just ask them.

If you buy a CPU and RAM along with the mobo they will mount it all for you and update the BIOS too. They don't charge for it btw.

When I picked up a 3600x for my wife, along with mobo and ram, as part of the free mounting process, they updated the bios in advance. I didn't even have to ask, they offered it. It was a free service to ensure it worked.

They do it for free if you buy at least the CPU/Mobo from them - they have to because they test if it works before giving it to you. If you bought the parts online or something and asked them to do it, you'd pay a fee.

He mentioned buying the hardware from them. That being said, I know some of the Ryzen boards, you can do a bios update on, without any CPU.

Yup, quite a few boards will let you do that, just usually not the cheaper boards. It's not Ryzen specific, but it's usually a premium feature. Definitely handy if you keep your board for a while and go through a few CPUs which is common with AMD since they keep the socket for so long.

Are you new to the interwebz?

    1) Identify a problem
    2) Post a new thread on forum
    3) Get told to call somebody
    4) Search for other threads on the same topic
    5) Finally concede and make the phone call
    6) Do not come back to thread to post what you learned
