I've said before. Would you rather the Chinese government or the USA government know your porn surfing habits? Personally, I'd rather have the Chinese government know, because realistically - its the USA swat team that is going to break down your door.

Huawei is better in that way.
Why would the US government bust down your door over porn surfing unless it's child pornography (ZenOps?).

Would you ever think twice about talking about Alberta separatism over Facebook Messenger? I wouldn't. Try that scenario in China as a Chinese citizen. Heck, I wouldn't even want it on my phone as a Canadian travelling there.

Anyone have new Wechat thoughts on a Friday night? I may be working closely with a team in China this year, so it seems like using this is inevitable. Apparently they use it for file transfer and video chat too. Actually sounds like a pretty full featured collaboration tool. Or maybe not? More than a chat app at the very least I guess.

Well, one of those is already all over the internet already.

Like I said before nothing to be concerned about. I use it daily with my vendors in China.

Well, I'm trying to sign up for it. But any of the "invite codes" that my coworkers send me don't work, and when I sign up without a code, it gets stalled out on the "verification" stage. My coworkers claim they can't verify me with the instructions the app is giving me, and I can't use the app unless someone verifies me.

So maybe I'm not going to be using WeChat after all? Frustrating, because it's being leaned on more and more by my company during this working from home situation.

Really weird, because any other social networking system I've ever seen allows you to sing up and then find people. This one is the other way around. I have coworkers user ID's and phone numbers, but until I'm allowed in, I can't make use of any of them.

Well, if the company needs me to use this software, they can figure it out. I'm available by phone, email, text, three types of video conference software, whatsapp and if really needed, in person. this ninth communication method isn't for my benefit.

Interestingly, I've used a lot of apps from a lot of developers, and most of them seem to want to make it easy to sign up and grow your network inside the app afterwards. Obviously a different kind of revenue strategy from this software.

Verification probably fails outside of China due to Wechat has now turned into a national ID system.

I don't know, other non-Chinese coworkers have it working. I'm going to file that as "not my problem" and let the IT guy worry about it.

Can confirm that it is possible to operate a RingCentral /Zoom meeting with someone inside mainland China. But can also confirm that it buffers like crazy.

Buffer due to government officials also sitting in on your meeting.

I think you have the Trump trade war to thank for that.

I assume there're some middleman trickery to make this work. You talk to US server and they talk to Chinese server and then server to server added the middle link, probably over some VPN in order to appease CCP.

The fact that it still work probably thanks to Zoom's CEO is Chinese and one of the tech hero in China.
