They can keep it in Chinese app store which is totally different than what we get. If US doesn't want WeChat, they can block it in US store, just like Facebook and Twitter is blocked in Chinese store.

If you work with Canadian government in any capacity, even a photographer for photo op, you are already advised not to have WeChat and TikTok on your phone. Although not actively enforced.

Seems like the right deomgraphic will be in this thread. Anyone know if Zoom Meeting works inside china? Need a video conference with some vendors that aren't going to be using WeChat.
    tee hee.

The number of people in North America who use Wechat daily to communicate with family and business contacts in China is really large. It's basically the only reliable way to easily chat with people inside the country.

But it's just an app in NA. It's life in China. Eventually Zoom will rise to meet that challenge since it's way tougher for US to ban Zoom and Zoom already got all the connection they need to operate in China.

It would be nice to have all apps opened to compete on an open internet. But that ain't happening any time soon.

Really, it's not hard to replace Tik Tok. Facebook is already at it and Tik Tok is really just defunct Vine which couldn't monetize it in time. The Zuck got enough cash to prop up a Tik Tok/Vine clone if he wants to. Just like Whatsapp and insta.

The U.S. Commerce Department plans to restrict access to TikTok and WeChat on Sunday as the Trump administration's executive orders against the two apps are set to take effect.
The Department said Friday that as of Sunday, any moves to distribute or maintain WeChat or TikTok on an app store will be prohibited.
In addition, the Department said, it will be illegal to host or transfer internet traffic associated with WeChat beginning Sunday. The same will be true for TikTok as of Nov. 12, it said.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Chinese moneys owns a lot of North American companies, and Wechat is widely used by residents here.

I haven't loved the platform, it doesn't seem to have many advantages, but it has worked fine for me.

I remember back in the day of using bbm with coworkers to form groups for specific projects. I like that feature, and I think people will use some software that allows it. Wechat, WhatsApp, slack etc.

You now can be like Extraslow and be the exclusive WeChat conduit for Americans that can't have that app.

Extraslow will soon be promoted to VP of Communication.
