Default WeChat, what do I need to know?

Hey, so for background, I've heard Wechat is like the whatsapp of China or something? I may be doing a work project with a team that communicates primarily through a Wechat group. Some of the team members are located in China, so I assume why they chose this platform.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but is there anything special I need to know in regards to Wechat? I don't hear of it being used here in north America often.

It's just another chat platform and nothing to be concerned about. I've used it for a couple of years as well for work.

Make sure to send them messages about politically sensitive topics. Stuff like, “Hey co-worker, remember how you were telling me about your plans to participate in the <insert separatist movement here> over the phone, good stuff”.

It's really common in China. Lots of my suppliers tried to suggest I use it so we can direct message easier but I've never been able to set it up. You need someone that already has a WeChat account to vouch for you basically. But when I did it, it always says my account is suspended or not authorized or something. No idea if someone already tried to set it up with my number or what (Joys of working with lots of China suppliers ... I get 50x the phishing attempts nowadays)

You getting phishing through phone calls, because your number is used to set up the account, or via email? Man, I'm seriously considering using a burner phone number just for setup of this system so my actual number isn't handed out for free to all the chinese bot farms.

Yeah. Same as my email though, started using a dedicated email for any contact just to keep all the spam and crap separate. (It's not we-chat itself that is spammy ... just a lot of the clientele that I have to deal with)

I wish google voice would hurry up and work for Canada to get easier burner numbers. I tried a bunch of the call/text re-direct services but most are banned because people use them for sketchy stuff already.

Speakout (7-11 wireless through rogers) is a PayGo service that has 365 day top-ups. So you could keep a burner number for $20/year

I would do that, especially if you have any potential dealing with Canadian/US governments. I asked why a Chinese pro photographer doesn't use WeChat and his answer was he can't have it if he wants government gigs.

Coworker was WeChatting with some friends back in China. He asked a question on politics. Suddenly, his iphone on Canadian networks rebooted and apparently, once he connected back up, his friend also said his phone rebooted. Chinese IT capabilities are far reaching.

Pretty hilarious you’d rather China than Facebook haha.

Well Facebook is evil and definitely working to reduce freedom of people around the world. So maybe they are worse than the government of China, but, well, it's an interesting argument to make.

At least Facebook is still somewhat subject to penalty by various governments. Look at what happened with the Cambridge Analytica issue, which really wasn’t that big of a deal. Who’s going to penalize the CCP?

I've said before. Would you rather the Chinese government or the USA government know your porn surfing habits? Personally, I'd rather have the Chinese government know, because realistically - its the USA swat team that is going to break down your door.

Huawei is better in that way.
