    Default Don Cherry fired

Looks like his comments about people in Toronto not wearing poppies really started a riot.

So stupid. He could've worded it better for sure but this is way out of proportion. Just make him wear a brown face and we are all good.

Somehow I’m surprised he made it this long.

Not the first time his mouth has gotten him into hot water.

Sort of on topic I don't wear a red poppy any more either and pretty much because the work clothes I wear and the job sites I'm at aren't conducive to such. Plus I would lose o ton of them but I still put monies in the puppy boxes when I happen upon one.

So not wearing a poppy doesn't mean I don't care or that I don't donate and if I had been at a service today, I would've been wearing a poppy.

On a different tangent: I really don't like the pins on poppies, they wreck the stitching on anything you poke it through, and its a hazard when discarded improperly.

Someone should have invented a better way by now.

Better ways have been invented, they've just all been rejected by the legion. The center pin style was pretty popular when they sold it. And I saw a very unofficial magnet back system that would be great for them to adopt.

Dudes whole shtick IS to be offensive - and I dont doubt for a second that the immigrant community in TO (eg. India) doesn't really care too much for the European wars from 80-100 years ago. I probably wouldn't either in that case.

He will apologize and get back into it after all this blows over. Its all about rating anyway and this is helping with 'clicks' for Rogers. Nothing else really matters.

Meh. Good riddance. It was only a matter of time before he crossed the line like this, surprised it didn't happen sooner.

    He's not wrong.
I applaud Cherry for sticking up for our service men and women who have sacrificed.

People are very quick to wear a rainbow or other symbols of "minority" awareness, but can't wear a fucking poppy to support those who fought to ensure those symbols could be displayed.

    Figure it out society.

Not mention people are carrying less cash, so it's a little harder to buy poppies. Would you rather I just take a poppy just so I can show my support?

Did Cherry's firing offend you? The funny thing is, most people defending him tend to hedge their position by saying he's done worse or that stirring up controversy is what he does, but that's probably that: you may not think it's that bad, but it's entirely possible that this is the the straw that broke the horse's back. It's unfortunate for someone of Cherry's status to go out on a note like this, but everyone has basically dismissed his segment as the ramblings of an old man who prefers his hockey players to be toothless grinders with mash potatoes for brains.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...n_war_veterans

We are getting awfully close to the "last man" here considering when WWII ended and the minimum age for duty. There have been many wars after WWII, but not as large or applicable to Canada. They have all got to be closer to 90+ by now. I can imagine that when the last veteran of WWII passes on, the poppies will also go.

Don Cherry of course being old enough to know many veterans, but has to realize that its long history for even an OK boomer.

Then let him go for that.
Don't politicize his firing in order to attempt to "save face" to the SJW crowd.
    This trend is fucking embarrassing.

I'm an immigrant. Don't remember the last time I wore a poppy. Don Cherry isn't wrong.

He isn't wrong...but let's get real, he is directly and unfairly shitting on immigrants in particular. For what reason....I think it's pretty obvious. Tell me why he doesn't shit on the at least 75% of white people that aren't wearing the poppy? That's the reason why I agree with all the hate he's getting back.

Are people being too sensitive? I don't think so, you'd be surprised how many people not only listen to what he says but also think the same way he does. We don't need that kind of beliefs/attitudes around any more. There simply is no merit to what he's saying, it's absolute garbage. So now, we're going to have people out there swearing and maybe even getting violent at visible minorities who aren't wearing one?! It's already bad enough that these halfwits believe the memes on Facebook/email strings that tell them that the refugees "Get more money" than veterans.

Blame technology, Facebook and other search engines only show the user subject matter with "similar" beliefs as their own, so we are being "Silo'ed" as a society and aren't always able to see the opposing view.
    This is a massive problem.

In that respect everything is politicized. What he said was wrong, unfair, and discriminatory. It's not an opinion that is socially acceptable and to say it on-air where he can reach millions of viewers is irresponsible and inflammatory. If he didn't get fired for this because it would "politicize the issue", then there's nothing he can say or do that ever would.
