I can tell you in one word that the CBE is ineffective and inefficient.
    Union!

I could go in there tomorrow with the new budget guidelines and still run a net surplus of funds and I wouldn't have to dig deep or cut useful staff.

A letter sent out every month telling staff how much money is in their retirement fund?!
    15k employees * 12 months * $1.05/stamp = $189k/yr.
    That's an easy one.
What's that, 3 new teacher's salaries saved right there in just moving towards a simple email reminder to login to their account to view an update to their accounts.

Yeah yeah argue the bulk stamp discount rate... But you get my point.
And I didn't include the envelope cost or the person spending a week printing and packing the envelopes.

Then move on to bulk orders of supplies. Go to grand and toy or whatever you want and push them for a deep discount based on your massive account or find the actual company and go directly to them with your large pens and paper order.
I can guarantee you the CBE is looking at the grand and toy invoice and saying, yep that's the cost...
You think I couldn't drop the CBE costs? It's more than easy when no one has even looked into it.
It's when it's been torn through for 5 years straight that it gets tougher to find efficiency but it can be done.

All the while, reviewing how to get the union out.

CBE sent an email to all parents in the Ernst Manning Catchment Zone this afternoon.

It said that due to increased school numbers and the size of the school they are redesignating all future students in the following areas to be directed to Central Memorial School instead:

    • Coach Hill
    • Cougar Ridge
    • Discovery Ridge
    • Glenbrook
    • Glendale
    • Killarney/Glengarry
    • Patterson
    • Richmond
    • Rosscarrock
    • Shaganappi
    • Spruce Cliff
    • Westgate
    • Wildwood

Wow what a kick in the teeth it is for students that are in Discovery Ridge especially that attend Griffith Woods School and now have to go to a different high school than all of their friends. Not to mention also that Ernst Manning Ranking and Rating is a cool 8.4/10 and this other high school Central Memorial High is 5/10

Meh. These things happen all the time. But of course it's the UCP's fault now.

5/10? How could that be possible, they are staffed by cream of the crop union teachers!

    Must be the UCP’s fault.

Shitty school boards and long wait times for healthcare services. As long as it's equally shitty for everyone - it's the Canadian way!

Are there any provinces that don't have long wait times?

In related news, the UCP has eliminated class size reporting requirements, so class size data will no longer be publicly available to parents.

The ones that fund health and education properly. Or ateast for a while before they vote in a government like the UCP..

    Crony capitalist playbook:
    1) defund
    2) lay off, close hospitals.
    3) point out how bad "public " service is
    4) push to privatize.

Then we elect someone decent and struggle to play catch up, but can't because the damage is so severe (take 3-8 years to educate new staff. Build schools or hospitals for our now swollen and underserved population )

    Then repeat.

The snow cone above mentioned the US. The US government spends more on health than Canada does, PLUS families pay large premiums. PLUS there are deductibles. Conditions. Limits. Exclusions. Yet we match their treatment outcomes, and beat them in some areas

    And education? Haha. Good one.

Knew this was coming down the pipe.
    https://calgaryherald.com/news/polit...-mismanagement
LaGrange said the CBE “has a history of questionable, irresponsible decision-making when it comes to its finances,” pointing to the 20-year lease of a downtown building in 2010-11.

“I have been extremely clear that I expect all boards to minimize impacts on front-line staff and teachers, and to prioritize the educational experience of our students. Alberta Education offered the Calgary Board of Education assistance in achieving this, assistance that the board refused,” she stated.

“The reckless misuse of taxpayer dollars by this board cannot be allowed to continue.”

Considering the CBE’s response to any funding questions has always been to take the number and divide it by 100k and say “well that means we are going to fire XX Teachers” as if that’s the only option for adjusting budgets.

It’s the CBE that decided funding teachers is discretionary, not anyone else.

Sounds like a swift kick in the financial ass is in order.

Why do we keep talking about the "CBE".

Let's discuss the names of the people at the CBE whoe are so incompetent.

I would argue that the people responsible are the public who keep electing ill-equipped people to lead the CBE.

    UCP is lying again.

Let's talk "admin" and "bureaucracy inefficiency". Lies. ALL school boards are in trouble. From surrounding ones to Catholic. There are about 40,000 teachers in the province, and 74 superintendents that take all the cheap shots. These supers also took a 10% pay cut in 2018.

But let's talk CBE since she attacked them first (an education minister, attacking education, how UCP of her). First, their "bureaucracy" (administration) consumes just 2.8% of their annual budget. Weird, that's better than CNRL for example. They have been running on shoe-string insufficient budgets for years, there's nothing left to cut!!

Second, she turned the lease of a new building into a negative somehow. Given 20/20, it was genius timing. The 1969 building no longer met the CBE's needs, so they put it up for sale, and leased the new location almost concurrently. They sold the "old" one in 2012. It flooded on 2013, and is STILL under remediation.

Genius though fluke timing. Counting this as an inefficiency is fucking criminal, just like we expect though.

Let's hear from the Union. They are a pretty quiet bunch these days.

Only on Beyond would you find people that think copying the US school system is a good idea. The school system that spends the most and produces some of the worst performing students in the developed world.

    Never change.

Dunno, must be the large discrepancy in socio-economic status down there. And gee countries with very high ethnic homogeneity do well. Who knew.
