Default Gate lock access from both sides?

So man door access gate on the side of my house. I have it locked with standard gate hardware and padlock. It is annoying to go through the house to unlock it. What am I missing? How can I lock it and access it from both sides? Anyone else have a solution to this?

Why fort knox? You know someone can climb your gate unless you have razor wire above it.

I had some "urban campers" checking out my yard pretty regularly, and it stopped completely once I "locked" the back gate with a bent nail. You aren't trying to stop Danny Ocean and his ten (or 11, 12 etc) comrades, it's usually just a couple of bored white dudes.

Installed a product almost exactly the same as this on my front gate and built a proper gate with iron lattice on top at the back next to the garage. We had people cutting through our yard at 1-2:00AM when we first moved in, the security lights would kick on and we would hear them coming through.
    This does not happen anymore.
We rarely lock the front gate unless we are concerned about the kids getting out of the backyard.

    Thanks for the input guys.

As for why.... the biggest thing is we back onto a green space so a lot of kids cut through the yards to get to the green space. The neighbor leaves his gate open 99% of the time. Just want them to cut through there if not through ours. Plus I can't see the gate from my back door so when I let the dog out for a pee, she is gone for a while if someone leaves it open.
