The article cites them taking a whole bunch of older reactors offline. Why is that?
I believe I once read somewhere that overtime the radiation damages the concrete structure of the facility, but I could be mistaken. So do these power plants ever pay for themselves? It seems like with how few moving parts they have that they could essentially run forever as long as the pumping equipment was maintained.
Popular Mechanics is a good magazine.

we can build successful 800-900 MW gas powered plants here in Calgary for 1.5billion CDN.
it’s definitely not a cost savings venture

Britain has very high power costs anyway. And they basically rejected natural gas, even though they have massive reserves of it.
Gas-fired generation is awesome here, and we should build a fuckton of it. But nukes are also awesome. Let's build this too.

The quotes in the UK included VASTLY different regulatory requirements - I suspect that the costs would be a LOT lower in AB - but probably not as low as a gas gen plant though. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
