Ah yes. "Since I am suffering, others must suffer also."
Fair enough. I don't know what you do for a living. I have worked both government and private sector and the earning potential in the private sector is really good when things are rolling, and they aren't great when they are not (if you can keep your job). Whereas with government it does not matter if times are good or bad, your salary is the same. It probably balances out over time, but I would really argue that people are further ahead financially over the long term in the private sector. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. This is a separate discussion on whether you agree or not with public sector wages for certain positions. I would argue it's hard to attract people to not only do the jobs but want to excel at it. It's part of the reason I left because no matter how hard I worked or how much I delivered there was no reward outside of the self satisfaction of doing the work. That's great and all, but you still get shit on for it in most instances and further drives down your motivation to improve things. I saw this happen to people I know and they stayed in the job and the only way to get by was to "not care" which I think is terrible.
I like the private sector because, the better my ideas are, or how hard I work I can be compensated for it, if I am doing something valuable.
Except there's been no salary cuts in the public sector. So no, they aren't suffering. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Same reason Alberta public employees were among the highest paid in the country during the good times.
Or the old “Have your cake, and eat it too.”

Let's not forget that Alberta still has the highest average household income of all provinces.
I find it pretty funny that you're mad at people who chose to pursue employment that at least had something resembling stability in lieu of maximum earning potential. Private sector pay scales much higher, but also has more risk. Of course, that's not a problem until the good times end, right?
All I'm pointing out here is the absurdity of it. But hey, you all clearly feel fine with it and so there's not much point of discussing it further. We all know it won't go anywhere anyways.
I've never suggested it's a good trade for the public to provide endless job and salary security to teachers. Our world would be better if teachers and nurses were also exposed to market forces.

so 20% unemployment amongst "young" men in alberta now. Highest rate since the 80s...
So, in the good times they get paid more or get performance bonuses and in the bad times their pay gets cut back? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
If that were the case then sure, just don't know how you budget for that because they would end up ahead in the end.
Would be interesting you know if there is a trend between AB downturns and bitching about public employees and their laziness and stability on Beyond
