Default 5 Speed Manual Transmission Rebuild

I recently had the 5 spend manual transmission in my 2012 Jeep Patriot rebuilt. It was done at 117,000 km and then 8 months later required a second rebuild at 127,000 km.

The transmission had not been serviced or had the fluid changed prior to the first rebuild at 117,000 km, but the transmission shop did not believe this was the cause of any issues.

Without any obvious mechanical failures or indicators of what originally caused the problems the transmission shop’s diagnosis was low quality parts from Chrysler.

If my odometer had 180 or 200,000 km I would not even be questioning this kind of repair, but a transmission rebuild at just over 100,000 km seems premature to me.

I would very much like to continue driving this vehicle, but have lost confidence in the transmission, and I’m not interested in making any more repairs to the drivetrain.

Repair summary and costs are below, I would be interested to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience, and any thoughts or opinions about keeping this vehicle or cutting my losses.

Welcome to owning a Patriot in Manual. My wife's 2010 started whining at 50k kms, then at 90k kms it did the same rattle noise with clutch in, at which point we rebuilt it.

The problem is the input bearing, and if you are having a problem this quickly after rebuild there's a chance they didn't change the right one. When you say "Main bearings", do you know if they included this one?

Either way. Yes, cut your losses. My wife loves hers for some reason and doesn't want to sell it, but I told her if the bearing starts making noises again, it's outta here.

Thats deplorable. Manual g/boxes are supposed to last the life of the frame. My wifes Mazda5 had the output shaft bearing go finally after 390,000 kms. It was undrivable at high speeds as it was so loud.

Could have fixed it but it was starting to rust pretty bad.

They are supposed to. Chrysler just didn't expect a Patriot frame to last 100k kms.

After 8 years it’s been a great little SUV, affordable, fuel efficient, manual gearbox and 4WD is great in the snow. Other than the recent transmission and differential issues it’s been just routine maintenance (oil/filter, brakes, tires, spark plugs), one rear passenger control arm and front passenger CV boot.

Overall, super useful little econo box with tons of utility.

    "Seems premature, to me"?
Yeah, I already dislike Jeep but I had a relative with one of these and we both hated virtually everything about it. Then I got stuck with one as a rental on a long trip. Holy. Jeebus. There can't be a worse Jeep than this! (Maybe now that the Compass exists).
So, it's super cool that you guys like it and it's meet your needs, but OmG get some matches, set it on fire and crash it into a lake. Replace with a any, repeat, any Jeep and I think you'll fall in love like you never imagined possible. If you like this thing, you would worship a better Jeep.
A Jeep Patriot is a skateboard with a noisy bearing, dressed as a Jeep. Please get rid of this wretched, shit-box as soon as practicable and like I said, but another Jeep and I think you'll be thoroughly impressed.

Surely there must be an aftermarket forum now where these shit boxes have had their issues ironed out. Eg. plastic part replaced with metal.

99% of the time the issue is the input bearing. One that is very visible if you open a plate on the end of the transaxle, and it looks entirely possible to remove it through that end, but on all the forums only one person claims to have actually managed to do it, and never followed up with how. So the the thing has to come out and case split.

Fucking Chrysler and their shit transmissions.
