    Default Golden handshakes

Golden handshakes, it's just cone to light (to city council at least) that the CoC has been doling out golden handshakes to many that retire. Now this doesn't surprise me as it's pretty much become an accepted norm that one gets gets packaged out at retirement with some sort of golden handshake, unionized position or not.

What I find intriguing is how we got to this point whereas a golden handshake has become expected and as such, do you expect (deserve maybe) a golden handshake when you retire? Why should one get a bonus to retire?

On a side note, I wonder how many of these golden handshake CoC employees have come back to pretty much their same old job as a subcontractor in the next week or so after? Double dipping, doing the same job while collecting a pension for the same work performed previously.

Not for private companies and golden handshakes are a thing in many large corporations.

I thought this thread was going to be about people who don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom...

Meh. At least they didn't regress. If you ask me NASA is one gigantic golden handshake for white males in the aerospace industry. Literally less capable now then 50 years ago. The only industry in the USA that has not grown 10 to 1,000 fold in ability (computers literally 1,000x faster and 1,000 cheaper) Arguably, regressed 10x in ability.

I can imagine after 17 years, Rob Anders is probably on all night drug binges. Lucky bastard.

Us, as consumers, definitely pay for the golden handshakes that private companies are giving. Where do you think the money comes from?

There's a difference between severance and a retirement bonus. Aside from executives, it's really rare in private companies to give bonuses as part of a voluntary retirement.

I think you might not be exposed to this in your line of work, but this is especially common right now in large corporations, particularly O&G.
Maybe an old boys club thing, I don't know.

Legacy people sure. But average starting employee now? No.

The thread is talking about retiring, so golden handshakes won't be referring to "average starting employees".
Most people who are given retirement packages have been there for a while.

How about the CoC crying about the budget cuts and them increasing our taxes and there is no room to cut cause....

and then they 'find out' that all of these city employees are getting nice cheques when they retire and then they can't even justify why it's happening.

I had an Aunt and Uncle work for the feds in St. Johns. Apparently both of them received nearly an additional year salary when they retired.

My wife got laid off last year from a large, non-OG corp (Vancouver based) - she got 3 months severance even though she had been with the company less than 5 years.

I thought something like 3-5 weeks would have been the norm.

1 month per every year of service has been common if the company is decent. Of course, there is a cap somewhere haha.
But it does also support the point why some of these "retirement packages" are so generous.

    Golden handshake =\= severance

Let’s not mix up the two, they are completely different

Involuntary retirement as well, which belongs in the severance bucket.

Side note: can we ban links to Rick Bell columns?

They should get rid of the golden hand shake for council. If you want a real golden hand shake, just pull a Bronco.
